Garnishing SSD

Simple question... can debt collectors garnish your SSD income for disibility to reclaim debt? Anyone dealt with this or know any place to find answers? All advice appriciated =)

I have also read that if you have your ssdi check direct deposited and it is combined with any other household income, it becomes a liquid income and can be withdrawn or garnished from your bank account. While it is illegal, creditors can get around the legalities noting that the income is liquid. It would be best to have your ssdi checks direct deposited to a seperate, individual account with a bank notation that it is ssd or ssdi. You will find lots of answers on the above site.

thanks shelly I do have it direct deposited into a govt acct that only accepts gov direct deposit and it is in my name only she gets a check for her $300 and I have no other job income =) i will definatly check out the site.

Nope I know for a fact that SSD can not be touched by anyone you owe money to - this does not include child support

If the Federal Government can't touch mine for back student loan debt then Nobody I doubt that yours can be touched for an old credit card debt

They can't! I've had this problem and all i had to do "prove" my ssd and they couldn't touch my disabilty or my work income. but, ssd can garnish an ssd check for over payment.

According to SSR 79-4: SECTIONS 207, 452(b), 459 and 462(f) (42 U.S.Constitution . Generally, Social Security benefits are exempt from execution, levy, attachment, garnishment, or other legal process, or from the operation of any bankruptcy or insolvency law.
