That's a real good question. I know they can garnish it for child support but I don't know about creditors. I'd like to know too.

I've never heard of credit collectors garnishing wages- do they do that?? I mean, even beyond the SSD thing - I didn't think they had the power to do that.

I know loans from the government (like student loans) can be taken directly from your bank account but never heard of debt collectors doing that. If that's true...that is a serious issue of power that needs addressed. wtf. that's nuts.

Their not suppost to but since no one enforces laws in this country they will anyways.

The reason I ask is someone is taking my wife to court for an old credit card debt and all she has for income is $284 a month from my SSD, I wonder if a judge can order it or if SS admin prevents it. I haven't found anything on the web yet an may need to call a lawyer $$$

I don't think creditors can garnish wages at all (including SSD wages). Only the government can do that (child support, etc).

Oh no credit collectors CAN and DO garnish wages. But I am with everybody else I don't think they can garnish SSD and SSI. Your wife's best bet is to show up at court and talk to judge.

They take you to court and if you don't pay or show up they get a court order. Yes it does suck and I wish it was illegal but sadly it is not.

I have heard aside from child support they can't but who knows with the way this country ha been going. I am in serious debt. Mostly with credit cards and the IRS and no one has yet tried to garnish my SSD
