I eat it on occasion, and I was wondering, what exactly is Okra, and why does it get all gooey when you cook it??

How do you cook your okra? It is really gooey if you boil it or cook it it in soup but it adds a great flavor for veggey soup or gumbo.Try battering it in flour and cornmeal and frying it and it is crunchy.

Westerner here(with Southern roots)..Okra..ya gotta love it ,or hate it..it's a vegitable ,and I really couldn't tell you why it gets slimy..I have eaten it fried(yum) or in stews or Jumbalias.

I know when you go into an okra field to harvest some by hand,you have to wear 2 pairs of jeans,because the plant has a gazzillion stickers on the stems..you end up throwing out the outer pair of pants becuase the stickers never come out....NEVER walk into an okra field in shorts!(learned this the REALLY hard way)

I would cut my okra in 3/4" circles before battering and frying. Do you fry them whole Steph?

I like to slice my okra and use egg and buttermilk before you batter it.

DD , I usually plant okra in the spring along with squash and tomatoes and always but the kind called spineless and it will make you itch a little but it is much better than some.I think it is a requirement for southern women to at the very least plant tomatoes and whee funny hats and gloves.

    My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
