Why is Finding a new psychiatrist so difficult? I am very unhappy with mine and i must have called 7 or 8 places today and they either don't answer their phones or dont take my insurance.I am getting very frustrated by this. Does anyone else find it difficult switching doctors?

It's one of the hardest things to do! Pdocs are notorious for being backlogged and unavailable. Do you perhaps have a community health center where you live? Sometimes they have a mental health dept and if you can't see a psychiatrist, you might see an advanced practice nurse practitioner (APNP).

YES! I never even had a pdoc until a few months ago. I was dxd and treated by my GP. But after being on this group and talking to everyone I figurered I needed a pdoc. I looked FOREVER! And any of the ones who had a good rep were full so I ended up with a pdoc who is known for being hard to get ahold of by his pts. I know this because I am one of the people who pages him at the hospital I work at and he never answers! He was my only option. So far he is ok but we will see.

Yep. When I switched to Medicaid my options were limited and my current p doc didn't take it. I got lucky and he referred me to one that did. I had to wait 6 weeks to get into him which actually isn't that bad. Do you have a PCP that can refer you to one?

I have found a bunch and called them all. so far no luck. I ended up making an appointment for my primary care doctor to see if she could refer me to one

Yes!! Where did all the psychiatrists go? They seem to have all disappeared. That's why I don't have one right now. My regular doc is very good as he has suffered from bipolar as well. So he knows his stuff and his meds. I'm keeping him until I can find ONE, just one psychiatrist that is taking new patients and accepts my medical insurance.

Can your GP not refer you to a new pdoc?... I'm in Canada and here you're referred by a GP

Yeah, they do it. Sometimes all they have are names and then you call and find that 1. He closed his practice or 2. He is not accepting new patients 3. It's someone foreign and I can't understand accents (yes, this really happened) or 4. They don't accept your insurance or 5. They are 50 miles away.
