Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

It's been almost two yrs since my daughter and I spoke. Lots of drama took place prior to this. She's thirty and lives in London. I extended the olive branch many times because she harbors conflicts about my outbursts which have occurred quite often in the past ten years. Apparently, she was does not understand my challenges and has made no efforts to educate herself about bipolar and anxiety disorders. She has been very critical and I have been confused and angry about it. She is a very practical, successful, and intelligent worldly person, but lacks compassion. There have been so very many understandings with both her and her husband that the damage is for the future unrepairable. We are not a part of each others' lives and she plans to start a family soon. This will add to the sadness. Reaching out is not an option since the few emails we've had have been just one sentence. I told her about a recent hospitalization for a bowel obstruction and did not get a reply. Is anyone else estranged from a former close friend or family member?
Thanks,
Elaine

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

People I know or see, seem to handle it differently...guess it depends on how much any one person feels they can Deal with, when pain becomes that personal.
My sister didn't have contact with her son for some 15 years, and she just did the "oh, well, his loss" thing. But I Knew she felt differently inside. Now, finally, they have begun to talk on the phone and stuff on Christmas and Mother's Day.
Sometimes it just takes that kind of Time, though I know you wish it wouldn't. And when you try to keep the lines of communication open, like with an email or something, it just leaves the Wound open too. Hard to know what to do.....
I have a son who is 25; he lives in another state and has untreated bipolar disorder himself. Our relationship can only be described as "tenuous", even though as he has gotten older he is more Consistent in contacting me and telling me he loves me.
I can remember some holidays when he and I Weren't speaking, and my family did not want to Talk about anything that is not "pleasant and encouraging." So I didn't mention my son, and neither did they.
"Group" pictures that we look at now, when Mother says to me, "Isn't is LOVELY? Everyone all together!" ...and I want to say, NO. My SON isn't in it.
Anyway, I Hear you. And I hope you will keep faith in knowing that time can be a great healer, but none of us are good at waiting.
I wish you peace today, Amuseme.

Big hug for you A....x
Parents teach your children that we are family and when someone is sick we do all we can to help. I wish I had.
Oh, I know. My daughter is has nothing to do with me, lives half way around the world, got married and didn't invite me and did invite her father. I was a single parent and there for her while struggling with a high stress, long hours career.I wasn't diagnosed til she was on her own. Her dad got involved in criminal activity and spent 18 mos in prison. In the last few years she learned her dad has an older daughter via an affair with a married woman. So I guess they are one happy family.
She has a great career and her husband seems like a good guy.It is and has been my heartache for awhile. I've read a lot about why bipolar parents are abandoned. Two majors are they are fearful they will have it and fear having to take care of a bipolar parent. I've read a lot about parental estrangement in general. Lots of despair and anger.
When I sent this year's BD card electronically and it never got picked up I was ready to consider the advice to go on with my life.
It is so bizarre! I moved here a few years ago I decided to hide the fact that I have a child. It works but it's hard not to talk about her and how lucky I was to have her - anyone would be proud. Before reading your post I was noticing that my anger has really receded
I can pray for a change of heart is all. I have no plans to reach out as I suffer mood problems for weeks when I am rejected.
Best wishes to you.
Accepting I can't change their memories, or thoughts, I can't make them think anything - good or bad.
Acceptance - not planning the outcome!
I have had 3 non family riffs and just cut them off.
I am so sorry this is happening to you. Could you write her a letter at an appropriate time and see if you can skype with the child? I don't know where you live. Let her be in control you know. The older I get and have the occasional episode the harder it is for me to raise above everything. Some of my friends and family have had to put up with so much.
I think your daughter will come around. If she feels she has control she would do it I think.
