Dystonic Reaction

About a month ago I developed a fairly severe dystonic reaction to the medication Seroquel. I lost almost all control over my body and was having constant muscle spasms. I went to the hospital twice in 24 hours because it spread from just my arms, legs, and back to my jaw. During my jaw spasms, my mouth got locked open and I couldn't breathe until it was forcibly shut. But just a couple days ago it started coming back despite my psychiatrist insisting that none of the medications I'm currently on can cause a dystonic reaction. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar reaction to medication and how they handled the side effects of the treatments to stop the reaction.

Yeah, my Dad was taking something for his BP and he work up one morning unable to move and my mother sitting next to him telling him to breath over and over again. It really freaked us all out. He instantly went and found a different shrink. If your doctor is still towing that line...FIRE HIM. I've fired shrinks before and it's quite satisfying when its for the right reason.

Your psych sounds like a fool, as many are. You'd do well to switch. In 1976 I was treated by my first psych for psychotic mania. He thought it was a good idea to give me a massive injection pf prolyxin (anti-psychotic) that was supposed to provide treatment for a month. What it did was cause a severe dystonic reaction that left the left side of my body semi-paralyzed and I had to ride it out until the drug was out of my system. It doubled the time I was in hospital. We earn our cynicism of psychiatrists this way, which in itself can be a positive thing. I wish you a rapid and full recovery.

I am surprised that they didn't stop the medication immediately in the hospital. I hope you are not still taking it? ask your pdoc for something else and if he continues to railroad you see if you can get a second opinion. It is no way to live. i hope you get the help you need. good luck and let us know how you get on.

I have not had that reaction but almost I have had problems with muscle stiffness. If a psychiatrist does not respond to his level of severe response fire him/ her immediately! Do what you need to in order to get proper care....Sorry this happened to you it's scary.

    I've been on high dose prednisone for pneumonia, and now I am slowly weaning. But lots of symptoms I don't like having, plus overeating has put at least 10 lbs on me. The food is "loud" as the GLP-1 users refer to it.Also pressured speech. Which comes out in my posts. Sorry I posted so much. I just need an outlet for my agitated and irritable brain. Just scroll on by my posts, if they are too...
