I'm just curious if anyone feels the same way I do...
Like many other people on here, I had to pretty much walk through hell before I was diagnosed, so I was all too aware of how bad being bipolar can be. Finding out that it runs in the family wasn't very comforting. In my generation alone, three kids (myself included) were born with it, one to each family. My cousins weren't as lucky as me. They didn't get diagnosed at a young age like I did and suffered the consequences of being unmedicated and misunderstood in this world; drug addiction, multiple suicide attempts, and eventually jail time. In the generations before the three of us everyone who had bipolar died at young ages, usually by their own hands.
My family history is not a pleasant one for bipolars.
Once diagnosed I thought almost immediately about what could happen if I had my own children. I know the statistics, the chances of passing it on. I decided that it wasn't worth the risk, no matter how small, that I couldn't bare the cost if I were to pass it on.
That was a long time ago, but my feelings haven't changed. I'm thinking about it now because I recently separated from my partner. The relationship didn't work out for many reasons, but one of them was because he wanted us to have children, I didn't. He simply couldn't understand my reasons no matter how many times we talked about it.
This was never an easy decision to stand by, but it's the right choice for me. I understand that many people who are bipolar have happy, healthy children, and I'm glad for them, but I refuse to chance it.
Has anyone else here made the same choice?

I'm feeling down,, and got alot on my mind right now. I got grief going on, on top my depression and anxiety and now I got to worry about somewhere to live since I can't afford living here since my mom passed. So many bad things have happened since my mom passed. One thing after another it seems. Yesterday our fence fell from a storm that hit, had to call someone to prop it up. Thank...
We all do the best we can, it sounds as your choice gives you peace - just like mine. That is what is important..... peace with our own choices!
All the best to you
I was petrified I would somehow pass this same abuse onto my own child so I dared not risk it. As it turned out I didn't need to worry about it as it later came to light due to a medical condition I could not have children anyway.
I have had to end a couple of relationships due to the chid issue and it is something that is hard for someone who is not dealing with those demons to be abe to understand I think.
I am the proud mother to my little yorkie and have been for 9 years and I spoil him rotten, he is all I really need.
We all have to make our own choices and I wouldn't wish my life on my worst enemy least of all my own children. I can respect your decision.
I will say that being bipolar isn't the only reason I've chosen to not have kids, but it is the most pressing one. What makes it so hard for me is the fact that a small, but very persistent part of me would like to have my own children... One can't always suppress natural desires. My ex knew that and tried to push the issue, which I didn't think was fair.
I'm not exactly at peace with my decision, don't know if I ever really will be, but I stand by it.
but yeah sounds like we all have a square idea that its just not necessary sometimes to bring new life into these latter days ...
I have 5 children...
When I was younger, as in grade school/high school age, I had my mind set on never having children. Not because of BP, (I wasn't diagnosed until MUCH later in life) but I suppose being the oldest of 4kids, I knew how much work kids were.
Alas, I fell in love, and started a family... 2 children from that marriage. I love them dearly. I also had a miscarriage. That marriage ended, and soon I married again...
Drs told me I wouldn't be able to conceive again and if I did, it would be dangerous... 2 miracle children in that marriage, were born. That marriage also ended...I love those children also.
A short time after that marriage ended, I had a short term relationship, and became pregnant again, but had another miscarriage.
Then, another short term relationship, and at 37 years old, I found myself pregnant again ... and at 38 years old, 8 years after the bathing my 4th child, my baby girl was born. I also love her dearly.
I then had a tubal ligation. I love all my children dearly, but decided that I was getting too old for having any more... and apparently birth control wasn't working for me.
I'm a single mom. It's not been easy, but I am blessed with 5 beautiful children. They all have their own personality, and yes, I'm suspicious that my chemical imbalances have passed on in some degree. But also, they have many positive traits, that have benefited and blessed others. My prayers are that they may learn to embrace and channel they unique qualities and live happily.
I wouldn't trade them for anything. I believe God gives us what we need, not what we always want, and can turn what bad choices into blessing if we get true to ourselves, and be faithful to Him.
