Commit her son (24) ? please advise!!

"Nancy" is flying out to have her son committed. She has also enrolled his father (they are divorced) to fly out on the advice that a" family can have someone committed." The young man's wife says she fears him -- he put his fist through a wall, but he has never hit her. I believe they might do more damage than good. He is in the military and this could destroy his career. I also believe they will fail because they can't prove imminent harm - or will OVERSTATE in order to get him committed. Please comment on your experience with this sort of situation. Her plane lands in two hours and I will forward your responses to her.

I don't feel like there is enough information here for me to even begin to give an educated comment. Putting his fist through a wall does not qualify him for a diagnosis of BP or mental disorder. I don't know your relationship to the family but it is probably best to stay out of their business between a son and his parents and wife? If he does have a mental illness and he is unstable, the priority should be his health and safety and the safety of others.

I was committed and it ruined my career. So, if he true is in need of help it could most likely ruin him.
If they except him he will be there on at least a 72 hour hold if not longer.
It destoryed my relanship with my mom after she done that

Based on this little bit of information it sounds to me like he needs anger management moreso than being committed. Now if there are different issues not discussed here and they involve mental stability then it's best left to the wife to decide. She is his next of kin and maybe with the help of his parents she can get him some help.

Be careful. You're right. They can ruin his military career. This will also most likely ruin their relationship with him.

Wish I could say more there just isn't enough info here to offer an opinion.

Thank you all. I wanted to hear your experience on what it is like to be committed (if that is your experience) and what the military requirements might be for commitment.

I'm not really asking for advice on what to do. I want to supply her with information she don't have. To try to have him committed and fail may do more harm than good. Outpatient therapy should come first - not my opinion but my understanding of sequence. Right?

This IS my family and I helped raise him. But I agree in most cases it is NOYB.

I have heard of trying to get people committed. i have tried to have my husband committed. It failed the two times I have tried. I was told that the person will be committed if in the middle of a psychiatric break. If a police officer is called, and if he wants to cover himself, (either has to arrest you or take you to hospital) he may choose the hospital, but just taking someone to the hospital will fail if just for why you said he is being taken.

if a mental health professional steps in and says "he needs outpatient treatment and he is safe to have at home," there is little chance of being admitted to the hospital. Has he ever seen one or can you contact somebody to vouch for him?
