Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
So this is so new to me, so I'm asking if you guys can bare with me. I'm really just reaching out to others who have Bipolar because I'm trying desperately to understand how this disorder could have torn everything I've built. So here it goes...
I've been married for 3 years to a wonderful man who I love very much. He was disgnosed with bipolar, however he stopped taking medication for years and has been fighting it on his own. As we moved through life mood swings, punching walls, depression, and manic episodes were part of our monthly routinue. However, I loved him and he loved me. So it was worth it, right?
Yet....three weeks ago he woke-up and asked me for a divorce. He said he loved me, but I didn't make him happy. He then left all his friends, schooling, family, and at the time our sweet baby I carried for 9 weeks. He stated he wanted to be friends but he didn't want me in his life. He then left to California got tattoo, broke his sobriety, and cheated on me. He told me his love for me died and that he wasn't ever going to want to be with me again.
Now, I know this kind of thing happens all the time. However, you didn't know him. He was such a good husband in so many ways, and literally over night decided to leave me. What...what is going on?

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...
He's still in denial about having bipolar, he told me he doesn't like the way the medication makes him feel. I miscarried our baby at 9 weeks and that didn't seem to phases him, I love him very much and I know that he's sick which is why I would forgive him. However, as more time passes the more I feel like I can't get back together with him. He brought our car back and said that he's filing for divorce next month. He couldn't get away from me fast enough, and left on the bus back to California. I'm just so at a lost...if this is a manic episode it's lasting so long. This has been going on for about a month, and I don't know how much longer I can handle it. It's like my husband doesn't exist anymore.
Have you been in contact with him at all since he left? One thing I would prepare yourself for is the possibility that he may come back and want reconciliation once this episode has passed (if it is a manic episode). Do you have supportive people in your life (or a counselor) that could help guide you and support you during this time? I am sure you have a lot of different emotions as you try to work through this. It could be helpful to talk to someone whom you trust to sort through it all.
I think he's going to crash and crash hard. He may want to reconcile. Do you have a therapist or counselor? Have you ever heard of DBSA? Some chapters have meetings for family members of those with bipolar disorder.
I doubt that he's going to be able to maintain stability without treatment from my own experiences. Bipolar disorder isn't just a case of mind over matter as some would like to believe. It sounds like he really doesn't accept that diagnosis though and it's going to take acceptance for him to really be committed to treatment. That is something you cannot control.
Good luck! I'm very sorry that you are going through such a difficult time.
My family has been a beacon for me during this time. I have been in contact with him, and finally got him to bring the car back. However, he was only here for four days and he couldn't leave fast enough. Him having a Bipolar Manic episode is the only thing that makes sense. Even when I take myself out of the equation, he's also just recently opened up a credit card he cannot afford. He's making such irrational decisions. I don't know if his Parents are getting him help, but I'm so scared of what will happen to him. I'm afraid that this episode will last forever and I won't hear from him. I still care about him and it hurts so bad to know he's doing this to himself.
How long do these episodes last? What can I do? Every time I call him he's icily polite and doesn't want to talk long. He's completely cut me off.
Right now I'm just waiting for him to reach out, but it's so hard because he's never done anything like this before.
