turn out just like your family even though you tried your hardest not to!
I find that I have some of the same traits that I never wanted to have! Like being opinionated, stubborn as a mule, and argumentative.
People don't realize but I really can be persuaded to change my mind. I change my own mind all the time. But just like my dad I might not fully get what the other person is saying the instant they are talking to me about it. But not many people realize it and they get annoyed and impatient.
I know I'm not a pick nick. The older you get the less and less sure of your self you become. It's not that being stubborn doesn't have times when it's useful or that it's wrong to have opinions, but I do it so often with out even being aware of it. It's hard for me to balance it out. I'm trying very hard but I still can't train my own negative behaviors completely out of me.
I still badger my brother and sister all the time. I'm not trying to control them I just want them to not follow in my stupid foot steps. Why can't I just be patient with them. They are just like me, instead of listening they get bent out of shape and argue with me right away! I only hope that they think about it later. They don't have to admit anything to me as long as they get a message that might be useful for them later in life.
But I know there were somethings I had to learn it the hard way there was no other way for me to learn it.
I think there really are some personality traits that are genetic, seeing as how almost every one I can think of on my dad's side of the family is like this. Stubborn, opinionated and argumentative. But not all of them think over what was said some of them never learn.
My dad will never ever admit when you were right nor apologize. I have to smile to myself though as I've seen him change his behavior because of something some one said in an argument. He didn't get it right away but he was still thinking over what was said and decided that they had a point after all.
I'm not sure if any one else has ever noticed though. Now I know not to ram him with my opinion. Even if he looks like he didn't hear a word of it I just let him think it over. I still haven't learned to do it with my brother and sister yet.
Think there's any hope for me yet?
What about you anything that seems like a genetic personality in your family? What behavior did you pick up that you never wanted to have?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

I come from a family of deceitful, lying enablers. I have make it my personal mission in life never to lie, regardless of whether the truth hurts or not. This gets me in trouble on this board fairly often.
I also chose never to have children because mental instability run in the family and I would never wish that on any child. I wish every day that my parents had never had children.
Example: My father was a rageaholic with a violent abusive temper. He demeaned everything someone said or did and nothing was ever good enough. He spoke intelligently and wanted to control everything that everyone said or did with judgmentalism (disguised as "knowing what he was talking about") I knew his heart was different but he never learned a different way to behave. I have two brothers who are exactly like him and they are toxic to me and very lonely in their lives.
When I realized that those behaviors were toxic and pushed people away, I worked very hard to unlearn old behaviors and learn new healthy behaviors. I don't believe in the statement "This is just who I am" because if I can change for the "better" I will. I believe if we recognize that our behaviors are "wrong" and we continue with them, we are only making ourselves miserable because others WILL walk out of our lives and we are stuck with ourselves.
I never won friendships or relationships being a bully, stubborn, opinionated, negative, or argumentative. Just because others down my entire family line (on my fathers side) are like this, does not mean I have to be. I "choose" to learn to be different. I will still have the same traits, I will just use them differently. I will still have times that "the lion" comes out, but the majority of "me" is not "my father". I will NEVER be my father or anyone one else.
I don't know all I know is these are family traits
and don't get me wrong I do work hard to not be like them, it's just that I ended up just like them any how! I didn't even know it until the pot called the kettle black.
It was like holy shit you're right!
I do things all the time with out even knowing that I'm doing it! Then I get mad at the end of the day when I realize how stupid I can be. It's like a never ending battle.
But you do tend to learn quite a few new tricks the old your get.
When I gain weight I really start to look like her too. Major incentive to keep exercising!
As hard as I try, I definetly hear the echo of many ancestors and my parents.
Actually my whole personality can change based on how my meds are working. I just can be what I believe to be my true self with out them. Off meds I'm so dysfunctional and I really am an idiot. It's not that I'm stupid it's just that my thoughts are too slow and I can't process what's going on around me nor can I have clear enough thoughts to make better decisions and use good judgement.
That includes arguing with people, and moodiness.
But since there is such bull headedness in the family I've always wondered. I've learned that I just have to manipulate my own personality that I can't change into a positive. You can't always change your personality or emotions that has nothing to do with behavior.
Still a human is a human is a human. I don't care who you are no one has 100% awareness to constantly be on them selves. At some point if you're too complacent your natural personality will still bleed through.
No one has to agree with me though.
And don't get me wrong There are some traits I avoided picking up. Especially the one's that pissed me off the most as a child. But I was so proud of my self thinking that I was nothing at all like them, well it turns out I was more alike then I had realized.
I think changing behavior takes time and practice.. .things that come out of our mouths can really hurt others.. I think sometimes if we bite our tongues and stop .. and think before we respond it can help...
How would you like to be treated and talked to?
What situations do you give yourself permission to talk and behave like this with others?....
I grew up in a very abusive home as well and went through a phase a long time ago where I would 'react' and try and control people and I found it just pushes people away and we can change..xo
Really, the only thing that drives me nuts is just the "AlmaG" type thing where they sit and yell and blame--that gets me.
We've had therapy. Dunno. They are okay.
