Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

Hi everyone! Sorry it's been a while since I've been here. Lots of family things happening so I haven't really had time for much. Forgive me.
So just in the past, I'd say, two weeks or so, I have slowly started running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I have felt restless and "pushed" to do things. I can't make myself stop. It's like inertia. Anyway, I wrote how I felt out for my pdoc because it was way complicated to try to explain (because I thought maybe I was becoming mixed or manic) and she said it was classic akathisia from either the Abilify or the Seroquel. Since she is uncomfortable taking me off either one of those, she is adding Artane? Apparently that is a really old drug, in the same class as cogentin, that interacts less with my cocktail and will have less side effects.
Does anyone by any chance have experience w akathisia or artane? Either way, it would help a lot. Thanks guys (and gals and everyone!)

I've used cogentin and it helped, never heard of artane but I hope it works for you.

I don't have any experience with cogentin or artane but I hope you feel better and get some relief soon!

Akathesia is the WORST feeling in the world. I got it really badly on abilify. You may want to have another chat with your doc because akathesia can become permanent even after you go off the medication if you are on it too long, like tardive dyskinesia does. Not something I would want to live with the rest of my life, and the anti parkinsons drugs just mask it.

I have had akathisia before. It is horrible! I have used cogentin before but not that other one. I hope you feel better soon!

I just read "Although ARTANE (trihexyphenidyl) is not classified as a controlled substance, the possibility of abuse should be borne in mind due to its stimulant and euphoriant properties." Perhaps that's what you're experiencing? I hope all pans out well!! Hope it works!
