Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

I've been reading this book by Kay Jamison called "Night Falls Fast" which is a book about the pandemic of suicide. It is an EXCELLENT book. It talks about the statistic that 50% of people with Bipolar Disorder will attempt suicide. I thought this was a very sobering statistic and spoke to the severity of the disease. Like the other night - i got stood up by a guy id never met. And it turned into this big negative self talk downward spiral of "im gunna die alone" "somethings wrong with me".... I was hysterically in tears.... I mean it was ridiculous. I had to take 2mg xanax. It is such a hard disease to manage. And it takes constant, daily maintenence. Reading this book tho has also made me realize that i am an extremely determined and strong individual for having made it so far and being as successful and accomplished as i am

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

But even if you accept that stat (and it is higher than the ones I've seen and I really wonder about some of the thing Kay says having read her own research), then 50% don't attempt suicide ever.
Try not to worry.
if ya look at how many people are misdiagnosed one bein myself as ADHD in the very beginning & all the mislabels that are dx'd cause they just dont know.. how do they REALLY know bipolar makes the 50 %? i know my button is anxiety and its in addition to bipolar.
it is hard ta manage & i think a lot of its circumstantial and obviously irrational thinkin when it comes to committing the act. JMO it is nice ta see someone trying to bring awareness to the problem tho.
very glad u came ta realize it does take hard work & u are proud of urself :) peace to u
The book took a poll and poll's can't reach everyone. But what your saying is a valid point that helps to motivate us to make our recovery a commitment.
Basically with that margin of error they don't really know, but the feeling is that it is at minimum 25%.
I noticed a tendancy in Kay's work towards making assertions that weren't really fully grounded and alot of it seemed to be anecdotal.
So I'd caution taking her estimates as being accurate.
Thx all again. It helps to know im not alone in this :)
