I work as a cashier at Target since October of last yr(2011). I have never gotten over my anxiety and fear of working. I take klonopin once or twice a shift depending on how long the day is.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get over this anxiety and fear? It's awful. Every day I dread going to work and once I get there my anxiety makes me want to just run out of the store screaming.
I'm on disability and only work 20 hrs a week. I really need the money I'm making to help feel my family. Otherwise I would quit. But that is not an option.
Please help.

My day...today...misplaced my debit card...didn't realize it until I got to the register after shopping to a full cart. Used a different debit card and pulled apart everything looking for missing debit card before I left parking lot. Got home, dropped keys. So now I have a missing debit card, missing keys. A full cartload to unload and put away. I got everything put away.Dumped purse for a...

Lots of reaching out works best for me. Allot of times just being able to put an anxiety into words will help me get them in check.
hugs and hopes, becky.
Cammiecat, I'm sorry you lost your job.
arfie, I am seeing a tdoc and so far it hasn't helped much. I will continue to see her though and maybe we will be able to come up with some solution.
I worked part time in a high end Department store, until it closed due to bankruptcy ( haven't worked since...do need more money !)
All I can suggest, is talk to HR , and see if they will let you take short breaks when you start feeling stress.
The ADA rules , say your employer does have to make reasonable accomodations for your disability.
You will need a letter from your Pdoc confirming your need for short breaks .
If you are a cashier, this might not work...maybe change your work position to stocking the floors ?
Is it the interaction with people that gives you anxiety?
I'd rather deal with deep depression than anxiety, it's horrible. I wake up some nights/mornings with a stiff jaw and bloody fingernail imprints from clenching my jaw and fists.
Bravo for getting through another day, I hope it gets better for you :)
I went to a seminar on anxiety and the pdoc who specialized in it said the first thing he asked all his patients was how much caffeine they drank...
Be careful of benzo's sweetie.. .they can over time have an opposite effect if your body starts asking for more... anxiety =another pill..
I'm glad you got through the day..x
Sounds so simple. I finally back tracked to when it started - it was when I had lithium psychosis and had to drive her in the dark in the winter on country roads - and I couldn't even punch in a phone number I was so uncoordinated from the overdose of lithium. I could not steer and do the gas/brakes at the same time. My 12 year old daughter steered, and it did the pedals. Seriously. Pretty stupid and dangerous situation, no wonder it triggered bad anxiety.
When I realized I was long gone from that stage, that I was not even on lithium anymore after that, and it would never happen again, the anxiety disappeared and never came back.
Some may or may not agree with this, but my pdoc told me he believes anxiety is related to PTSD. If you deal with the issue that happened, it helps to relieve the anxiety. It worked for me.
Of course, if your life is highly complex, or if you have an anxious personality by nature, figuring out what is triggering you could be very difficult.
I am glad you made it through another day, but very hard having to go through that every day. I hope you can either talk to your employer, or see your way through the issue, and what is provoking the anxiety, if it is even possible.
I haven't told my employer that I'm on disabillity yet , but plan to soon because I worry about them working me too many hours. I have 7 more trial months left and don't want to use them and get kicked off disability.
Angela, that sounds terrible what you went through, I'm glad you were able to work through it.
