I have also said stupid things to people in pain. A distant relative aged in his early teens was lost in a car accident. I didn't know him very well. I was as thoughtful and sensitive as I could be when talking to his father but when it came to talking to the boys older brother I was an idiot. I just didn't know what to say. I wished him a Merry Christmas. I can't believe I did that. It just came out. I can't tell you how bad I feel about that.
Since my loss I have people ask me some of the same questions. I don't take it as them trying to be hurtful. I take it as them trying to make me feel better. And if we [people who have lost a loved one] don't let them know how it makes us feel when they ask those questions, how can they learn and how are they expected to know how hurtful it is.
I try to tell them in the nicest of ways that their remarks hurt and 99% of the time they apologize and tell me that's not how they meant it.
People do care and all people aren't out to hurt the greiving. They themselves just don't understand or have never gone through the pain of losing a Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, Husband, Wife, or Boyfriend/Girlfriend.
I will never get over this ask she put it it is now 17 yrs and I still have good \bad days
and she still a ex-friend
I also let her no pray she never walk in my shoes
I'm sorry for your loss
I think some remarks are just people who don't understand trying to help and stuffing it up like "it will get better, God's will, in peace now etc" People who have never lost anyone close don't know what to say and just say things they think might help.
The ones that try to urge you along like "focus on something else, Aren't you over that yet, it's time you moved on" I think these sorts of comments are about their discomfort with your grief and they would be better to shut up.
I'm sorry that you have to bear those comments, but anytime you want to talk about your loss one your DS family is here with open eyes/hears.

One of my ex-friends explained to me there is a reason for everything and implied if I was more spiritual God would have protected my son from death.
I do not have to tell you she has never lost a loved one.
