Unless the air mattress is completely waterproof (most aren't), I'd suggest covering it with a waterproof cover or mattress pad to prevent anything from soaking in. A plastic cover is cheap (around $10) and easy to clean, but less comfortable; a waterproof mattress pad runs around $50 and needs to be machine washed each time, but is far more comfortable for most people to sleep on, depending on what he is used to at home.

As long as the mattress is protected, and you wash the bedsheets and whatever clothing he was wearing PROMPTLY as soon as he wakes up in the morning (at 12, he could probably even throw them directly in the washing machine himself, if you and he think it best), there shouldn't be much if any residual smell. Throw the sheets and his clothes together in one load of laundry with standard detergent and it will come right out. The smell comes from urine soaking into mattresses or upholstery (using an air mattress with a protective cover, not a problem) or from letting it sit and break down for hours before washing.

For the mattress cover, if you use a plastic one, simply wipe it down with a warm damp cloth and then toss the cloth in the laundry with the sheets. You can spray it with Lysol disinfectant if you want, but as long as it's cleaned promptly in the morning that isn't even really necessary. If you use a quilted waterproof mattress pad, wash it as its own load on the delicate cycle and make sure to dry it on low heat.

If you follow the above steps, you may find that there's little to no smell in the air at all, especially if the room is well ventilated, but if there is still residual smell, Febreze works great.

Thank you midnight, at home that is his first chore every morning if he wets then he has to put it in the wash. He pees so much at night that he soaks thru everything and never wakes up. He is on his third medication to try and help. He understands that he can't spend the night with his friends or go with his granddad on our truck and he is OK with that so I'm gonna stay home this summer keep three grandkids and hope i survive cause I'm 58, WHEW!!!

if you have a dollar tree near you check the pet section they ave a version of urine gone which is an enzyme based cleaner I have seen different versions over time it comes in a spray bottle and depending on the version they have they might call it pet stain and odor eliminator or some variation like that it does work

I applaud you on your decision to take your grandson in and I agree with the advice midnight 77 gave you. I would like to add one more step to to washing the bed clothes and sleepwear. I have found if you run them through the rinse cycle in plain cold water BEFORE you wash them, it will completely eliminate all odors. Good luck this summer and hug your grandson for me.

I've found that adding borax to the wash prevents odors.

However, I do NOT recommend Febreze - it is toxic, can trigger asthma, etc.

Why don't you get him a more absorbent product?

Along the lines of what's already been said here a couple of ideas that might help. There are pads called diaper doublers and are available in most stores where kids diapers are sold. these will give greater absorbancy and along with the doublers I would add a pair of plastic pants. Sounds babyish I know but they worked in our house. Hope that things are working well.

you might also add either disposable or even reusable underpads aa chux pads the new Goodnites ed mats have sticky tabs to hold them in place a little extra protection against leakage

It seems silly to even bother witht eh pullup if he just soaks through it. I assume he prefers the pullup because either it's easier for him to put on himself, or he feels more stigma wearing something more similar to a baby diaper.

I suggest he doubles up. Either the soaker pads as others have suggested, or wearing two pullups. You just need to slash the backing on the first so the urine distributes into both.

I still recommend a waterproof matress pad as a backup.

Why don't you get him an enuresis alarm? They will help teach his brain a connection to the bladders full signal and he can stop bedwetting in a few weeks.

Alarms don't work for everyone. I always slept through mine but it woke everyone else up. By the time it woke me I had soaked the bed and had to get up and change the sheets. It wasn't long before it was decided to let me become dry in my own time.
