Autism is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder which manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, many researchers suspect that autism results from genetically mediated vulnerabilities to environmental triggers.
I just wanted to give you guys an update on where we are at with my 3 yr old daughter. We were having a hard time finding where to get the right help. Well, this week our local Autism charity arranged for us to see a paediatrician that has been trained in diagnosing autism. She didn't want to give us a definitive answer without more tests, but she did say there were some flags to be concerned about.
She referred us to a place that offers speech and occupational therapy. We dropped her off there today for a half day so they can observe her and let us know if what they offer can be of help. The director meets with my husband and I tomorrow to let us know what they found.
In addition to speech and occupational therapy, she also told us that they can assist with potty training, which has been a huge challenge for us.
I just feel so good to know that we might have found something that can turn the situation around, and I wanted to share. It won't be easy by any means, but at least know we are heading in the right direction.

I'm glad to hear that you're headed in the right direction. Indeed, things won't be easy -- life never is for any of us, regardless of our situation and challenges. But facing those challenges head-on with love and compassion for others can make our lives better.
