Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

Believe it or not, most of us with anxiety disorders still work. We may take a couple of weeks off if we are having a particular bad time, but most people with anxiety disorders find ways to cope. Have you read through the posts on this site? Most posts give examples of ways to deal with panic attacks and anxiety so you should read some of them. Also, go online and find out how others with this disorder help themselves with breathing and meditation exercises and going to talk to a psychologist for talk therapy. There are many tools you can learn to help yourself fight this disorder so that you can get back to work. Good luck.
I certainly understand how a stressful job can bring on debilitating anxiety. You must take care of yourself so quitting your job was probably a wise decision. I just meant that your goal now is to get strong and well enough to find another job. Focus first on researching ways to help yourself cope with your anxiety. Prescription drugs can be one source for finding relief from panic attacks but, in the end, you also should find alternative ways to help yourself, too. It takes work to conquer anxiety disorders. :)
If you develop anxiety so bad you can't work they would expect you to be under the care of a counsellor/psychiatrist and would require a medical certificate to go on a sickness benefit, for the period of time required to get you back together. I think there is a stand down of 1 week and you are expected to use up all sick and annual leave from your job first. Over here you'd be sent a letter after the first month, then after the next 3 months, then after the next 6 months to see if you are 'fit for work' and would require to provide a med cert each time. If you could not provide one you would be transferred to the 'jobseeker' allowance and be required actively seek employment, to front up regularly and meet requirements (set number of job applications a month, etc.)
I think you made the right decision in quitting, because that definitely worsened your mental state. You have to take care of your mental state before you take care of your work state. It sounds like you shouldn't have any trouble finding new work and that it's just on you to get better. And I think you're doing exactly what you need to in taking it step by step and day by day. That's something my therapists have always told me to do, but with my anxiety, it's very difficult for me to do. So kudos to you for doing it!
It doesn't sound like your work ethic is an issue and your head seems to be in the right place with all things considered. As long as you don't beat yourself up about your situation I think you will get out of it!
