Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
remember that anxiety is an all-natural part of the survival instinct. i expect to experience anxiety for as long as i have the will to survive. i focus on managing more than curing. do i really want to cure my survival instinct?
I feel like there is often not one catalyst or cause. In that case looking for the root seems more like looking for a needle in a hay stack.
I think management is a more attainable goal in my opinion.
That turning point of the eyebrow resulted in many anxiety situations that blew out of control quickly.
I agree with arfie and rmb that managing is the better method to work with.
I have grown up with anxiety and so the physical impact I learned early to work with to keep them to a minimum. The brain work, though, I am able to work with through writing it out, and sorting it out, and through sharing with people in this group, all of who understand the differences in anxiety.
beating myself up for the setbacks doesn't seem to do any more than feed my feelings of inadequacy. often, what i feel as setbacks turn out to be nothing more, nor less, than part of the healing process.
I read the book F*ck Feelings, a self help book recommended by another DS member (shout out to Yoss). It is one of the best books that has helped me tremendously.
One point the author makes is we often spend all this time attempting to pinpoint the root or determine the exact even that caused our issues. He believes it is time consuming and ultimately doesnt matter in the long run. Discovering the root wont change the current condition. Healing and working towards balance is the only way.
Anyways, check out the book. It is Hilarious! You deserve to be happy and things that make you smile.
Speaking of your sister, do you know if any other family members have anxiety? I read that it can be 25% genetic. My Mom and one of my brothers has/had bad anxiety, and I have it, too. But my Dad and my other brother never had anxiety (I asked them!)
As others have said, getting to the root might not be the "cure" for anxiety, and it is focusing on the past, and I just don't think it's helpful in dealing with the present.
You are going on the right path. I'll encourage you again, to just live your life every day, and try to minimize ruminating about the Why, Where, How.... etc. Because I know from my own experience, that the more I think about it, it just wastes more time that I could be out doing something. We can spend a lot of time thinking and wondering. Just make sure you're also spending a lot of time going out and doing things. Real life experience will help conquer those fears. You're doing great!
