natural remedies safe with SSRI's

Hey ya'll! Just curious if anyone has taken any herbs or supplements while on SSRI's? I just increased from 10mg to 20mg of lexapro. It's definitely working but not as well as it used to. It took about a month for the 10mg to kick in, so I'm wondering if it will take another month for the 20mg to kick in. Definitely giving it more time but wanted to see if there was anything else I could try in conjunction. I take Natural Calm (magnesium) a few times a day which helps a bit. I know certain herbs and supplements shouldn't be taken with pharmaceuticals. Let's hear what ya got!

You probably already know this, but St. John's Wort should never be taken with an antidepressant. Other than that, I'm not sure. I would like to know though, because I'd like to take a GABA supplement along with my Prozac to see if it helps. (The brain chemical GABA has been found to be low in people with anxiety.) I know a doctor would probably say not to take supplements, but I think it's because they don't have clue about them, with the exception of Neuropathic doctors.
I'll be checking in to see what other people say. =)

I suggest you talk to your doctor before combining any non-pharmaceuticals with SSRIs.

In my case, since I am bipolar also, non-pharmaceuticals can send me into a mania or even a depression.

Since i am not willing to take that chance, I stay away from them. I don't know what they could do with unipolar disorder.

Like I said before, check with your doctor.

I take my medicine at specific times, and have had success with taking certain supplements as well.

It really depends on the symptoms, and what possible interactions could happen with the combination.

I would let the doctor know you are interested in trying a combination treatment plan.
