When you change the way you say, do, act, react, and respond for your well-being, it changes their usual response, sometimes, for the worse as the usual response no longer fits. It changes,
For me, once I practiced the stop, pause, breathe, option, until I was calm enough to think clearly in the moment, I was able to remain silent and that stopped the words from escalating.
It does not take away the 'hurt feeling', however it does stop the automatic return fire words flying back and forth.
In supporting my well-being and not taking the words aimed at me personally, I was able to consider the information included in the conversation so that when it came up again, I had a calm, clear, and concise comment to speak.
Finding the balance in the moment, and working through the 'hurt' to release the feeling naturally is worth the effort. It will change the way you speak with this person.
A word that defines a specific relationship is not the same as a word spoken by the specific person. I removed the relationship and put a name in its place in order to figure out how I wanted to handle the subject when it came up again.
I agree, keep venting safely, and express all of the feelings. Experience the full moment and release it.
