General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. So I went to an open mic tonight. I've been going every Wednesday for a while now to try and get used to going out. I really enjoy being on stage and connecting with the audience through music but as soon as I get off the stage I fall apart. I turn into a stuttering, out of breath, twitchy weirdo.
I can't make it through a sentence without my voice cracking or stuttering. I also find it hard to control the volume of my voice. I either feel like people can't hear me or they think I'm yelling at them. I thought going out over and over would help me get over this social anxiety but it's not. Does anyone have any ideas for what else I can do to try and be less awkward around people? I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

We are having a lunch meeting next week, which I am looking forward to. Yesterday was...

A form of therapy called systematic desensitization, is also used. In this treatment, a person imagines a frightening situation, like being on stage, and works through fears in a safe environment, such as a doctors office, or in a group counseling session.
Medication may also be helpful, but that involves SSRI's. So only use this medication if absolutely necessary.
To help you find your volume control switch, stand in front of the mirror and practice listening with your fingers on your neck gently to find the level that you are comfortable with. This will help you find it when the "wiggies", "squeakies", and/or "cracking" sensation happens.
I learned that this is a common anxiety trigger, physical symptom, and can be a combination of both.
Best wishes, and you are to be commended for going out and facing this fear head-on! Hurrah, and keep on, you're almost to the other side of this one!
