General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

My roommates are both staying elsewhere tonight and being alone is not easy for me. It brings up a lot of anxiety because I was abused in my childhood and even though I know my mother can't get to me here, I still get very anxious when I am alone for longer periods of time. Then the anxiety about my mother also brings up flashbacks from the abuse. I am a complete mess. The anxiety the fear and flashbacks are causing is making me freak out. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help me calm down?

I'm sorry you're going through this right now. Is there any friend that could come and hang out with you? Or be able to talk to on the phone? We could talk on here if it would help? I'd say too to just try to go to bed early, probably the daytime isn't as scary.

I don't have any friends that can come over... if you can talk on here that would be great. How do I get the chat thing to work?

Have you tried leaving the TV or radio on? If you tune to a news or talk station, the voices can be reassuring.

I also get anxious when I am home alone for long periods of time ( especially at night ). I know it sounds silly, but I make sure the door is locked, and I lock all the windows and keep the blinds closed. Having the TV on, or listening to music helps me forget about it. I don't like to read during these times because the silence seems to make the anxiety worse. During the day it doesn't bother me much, just at night. Hope you're doing ok.

I watch old movies when I'm alone at night. I also have a cat who makes me feel at ease. Do you have any pets?

I know that if I'm going to be home for a while I see what my friends are doing and if they want to hang out. It also helps that my friends understand that I get anxiety over being home alone.

Thank you all for your advice. I did make sure everything was locked, and turning on some music did help a little. Sadly, I don't have any pets, and all of my friends were busy, plus I had to work at 6am.

This is what I was taught, put those hurtful feelings in a box in your head temporarily. Think of your favorite thing, place to be, and go there in your mind. When you are ready, go back and open the box, but I would suggest doing this with a counselor. Good luck.

I bought Xanax from medsheaven.com and this medication helps me with anxiety so much and I highly recommend it.
