Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
Hi! I'm new to DS and trying to figure out how it all works. I have struggled with anxiety since I was quite young (4 or 5 years old). I finally got a handle on it in high school; I was able to go down to seeing my therapist once a week and I wasn't on any medication my junior or senior year. I'm in my first year of college now and I'm having a really hard time. Transitions are really hard for me so moving into the dorm and being away from my family has made coping with my anxiety even harder. It's also bringing up some other issues I haven't dealt with in a long time (OCD, phobia, some disordered eating, etc) so I'm just struggling a bit. I'm hoping to find some support from this group as well as help some who struggle with similar issues.

I had my first real tangible experience with "anxiety" my freshman year of college too. Bad roommate, being far away from home, finals stress...yup, it added up real quick. The best thing for me was to TALK. Rather than trying to hide how I was feeling, I found people (family, friends, school counselor) to talk things through with them.
For finals, I broke down a timeline of what needed to be done, when it's due etc. This helped me to break down a big ball of stress into tinier, more manageable pieces.
It was always better for me to take my problems/stressors and try to tackle them one at a time. You can solve all your problems all at once. It's too big a mountain to climb for even the most experienced climber.
Overall, try not to hole yourself up in your room too much. If there's an event on campus, go to it! It will feel good to keep your mind off your anxiety, even for a short while. You just need to develop a new "normal", a new routine.
Welcome to DS and you're not alone here :)
You have found a place where you can share and know you are not alone.
Welcome aboard. Listening. . .
Talking and doing, help release anxiety naturally.
Best wishes with your college experience! You're stronger than you realize!
Every time I had a transition, whether it be starting school or moving to a new area for a job, I always hated the first couple of months. You just have to bite the bullet and weather the storm so to speak. It will get better. You will gain familiarity with your new surroundings and the new people. For years I always shied away from putting myself out of my comfort zone, but that is no way to live and will make you feel far worse in the long run.
You are brave for going to college and moving into the dorms. It's an excellent opportunity going to college, you learn loads about yourself and life. So try and put yourself out there and make connections. There will be loads of people at your college feeling a similar way to you.
What always helped me was having an anchor. Something I felt in control of and something that was part of my old routine and could pick up my moods. I used the gym, it was my happy place, but it can be anything.
I hope you manage to come to terms with your new situation, if you ever struggle you can always vent here, plus I think most colleges have therapy and counselling services for students. Good luck with your studies and try to have some fun.
