Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
Hi my name is Debbie and I am brand new here. I JUST joined and would ask if anyone has any advice at all to please share. I am so exasperated and hopeless.
EVERY SINGLE MORNING I struggle to get out of bed. And its not like the ugH I just dont want to get up because Im so warm and comfortable. Its more like Im anxious and AFRAID to get out! THis makes no sense to me at all and my therapist isnt shedding much light on it either. I have no right to be afraid. I live in a safe house in a safe neighborhood. I have never been scared in my own house before! It sets the stage for the rest of my day which means a lot of my days I'm miserable. I promise I try to talk my self into not being so silly and irrational. I visualize myself hopping in the shower or going to the kitchen to eat breakfast. I wish I could pay a coach or someone who could coax me out of bed and make me accountable for doing it!!!
Is this a strange phenomenon or can anyone else relate?

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

Years ago, I won a mirrored armoire from my job. It's in my bedroom but I rarely stand in front of it. Yesterday, I had to have a dexascan done so I had to change into a gown. There was a full length mirror in the changing room. I'm aware that I gained 5 to 7 pounds over the last year from cheating on Keto but I didn't know what it looked like. It was a reality check.
i don't know how well it relates to your case, but bizarre twists and turns on my anxiety spectrum almost qualify as normal-for-me. just when i think i have all the answers, the frigging questions change.
writing it out and sharing within my peer support network helps me sort out what the deuce my anxiety is niggling about this week. this very forum is one of the places i come to do exactly that. i hope it serves you as well as it serves me. vent freely. vent often.
for what it's worth
i'm not quite sure why, but i find myself a bit shocked at the phrase, "... no right to be afraid." fear has rights? hm-m-m-m-m. . . .
Here's to changing the way you find the view in the morning when you wake up. What feels good? What looks good?
Strange to reset the way your brain clicks to new scene.
Best wishes as you find your better balance.
Many years ago I had same issue (different circumstances) and my wife would literally push me out of bed. May sound mean but it was good, I needed it. I'm alone now though so it's tough. My cat cries for food but that's about it.
So I don't have a great solution for you, just you're not alone. I used to leave my phone outside the room but set the alarm, forcing me to get up. Wasn't depressed at the time, but just occurred to me same stragety could still work.

Welcome to the board! I have been living with anxiety for 25 years now and it is a daily struggle, for sure.
A simple quick solution for what you wrote would be - what do you have to do in your life that gives you a reason to get up in the morning? Do you work, or volunteer, have a partner, kids, grand kids, pets to feed, errands to do, etc. Having a "reason" to get up and going in the morning each day, is a good place to start.
How long have you had anxiety? Do you know when this started? Did something recent happen that has made you feel this way or has it been this way a long time?
If you can trace it back to a specific event or time in your life, then therapy can be very helpful in working with any traumatic events. As @2magicman said above, you may need to look for a new therapist, too. A therapist that gets you excited, happy, hopeful, optimistic... about the future. Someone who makes you feel like you can't wait to get up in the morning so that you can get going with your exciting, fulfilling day! :)
And lastly, if not wanting to get out of bed has been going on for awhile, say a month or longer, then you may have depression, as well as anxiety.
Are you on any anxiety medication? I think seeing a psychiatrist might be a good place to start. They could see if you need any medication, and they can refer you to a new therapist/psychologist.
You are not alone.
I can totally relate as I am feeling the same way lately. It isn’t that I don’t have things to do or anything to be afraid of, I simply feel blah in the mornings and don’t want to face it. I feel better as the day goes on. I think after a bit that it becomes a habit thinking “oh, no, it’s morning and I am going to feel bad.”
I think depression has something to do with it as lots of people with depression tend to spend more time in bed as a coping mechanism. I don’t sleep well lately and that is part of the problem. I keep thinking if I just stay in bed longer I will be able to catch up on my sleep.
Are you sleeping well at night?
Good luck and welcome to DS.
and anxiety does not depend on reality or truth--so it doesn't matter to anxiety that you are actually safe--your anxiety does not care about that. but you an tell it to stand down--I say to myself "no tigers in here...safe and sound" for m that means I am safe in the moment. and I breathe deeply for a few minutes to get rid of any lurking tensions...
I find that it's helpful that my dogs need to be let out. I respond to their little barks, and I don't want to mistreat them by making them have to hold it too long. Once I am up, the anxiety usually seems to dissipate.
See whether there is something else you can use as a reason outside yourself to make it necessary to get up. A pet is nice if you can have one. Or maybe a friend can text you every morning. This helps me also.
