Ear Infection & antibiotics

Hey all -


So I’m getting panicky.  I went to Urgent care on Saturday and got diagnosed with an ear infection.  (The pain is so bad I haven’t slept in days). The doc gave me ear drops and amoxicillin.  I put off taking the amoxicillin because last time I took it I got yeast infections and just felt really ill.



i finally caved in and started taking it today because the pain was bad and hadn’t gotten better.  But now I’m freaking out that the amoxicillin is gonna ruin me.  Took my first pill 20 minutes ago -  it just sucks cause once you start you can’t stop

I understand you have anxiety about taking the antibiotics because of a previous bad experience. But I am proud of you for starting to take them! Good! IF... big IF you get another yeast infection, that is easily treated with over the counter treatment. But you probably won't get a yeast infection at all. If you feel ill, that could also be from the infection. I looked on WebMD.com and found what *could* happen if you leave an ear infection untreated (including meningitis which is fatal, hearing loss which could be permanent,, etc).. I strongly suggest you keep taking the full course of antibiotics, get rid of the infection once and for all, and you will be all better in about one short week. Small price to pay for what *could* happen if you left it alone.

From web md - "Ear infections can lead to more serious complications, including mastoiditis (a rare inflammation of a bone adjacent to the ear), hearing loss, perforation of the eardrum, meningitis, facial nerve paralysis, and possibly -- in adults -- Meniere's disease."

The best thing you can add to your daily routine while taking antibiotics is to reinforce the good of the medicine to help heal the ear infection quickly.

Keep your focus on the positive.

If getting a yeast infection what’s giving you anxiety about taking the antibiotics you can start eating more yogurt. The yogurt has probiotics in it which will restore the normal flora the antibiotic is going to destroy so it will help balance you out while you’re taking the antibiotics. It does help prevent a yeast infection. Good luck, hope you feel better soon!

I agree with Ih8PTC, and also suggest maybe using a monistat type cream while taking the antibiotics to make sure you don’t get a yeast infection. Taking a proactive approach

You guys are amazing thank you. The worst part was that initial fear of taking it. But honestly the ear pain was so bad I had to do it - Motrin hasn’t helped it at all. I got yogurt and some cheese to help with the bacteria imbalance while taking the amoxicillin

Hope you're feeling better. It could take a couple days for the antibiotics to kick in. Eating yogurt might help, but it has to be plain yogurt, not flavored or any sugared kind. Sugar feeds yeast.
Sorry, but I disagree with using an antifungal such as Monistat for preventive measures. Chances are, you won't get a yeast infection from taking these antibiotics (rarely you do, but most likely you won't). I Googled it to double check -

"Antifungal resistance happens in the exact same manner as antibiotic resistance. Using antifungal drugs too often or incorrectly kills off good yeast present and encourages the growth of harmful yeast, so if/when you do get an infection, it's more difficult to treat."

    I did the dumbest thing today.  I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds.  I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym.  What a dummy!
