Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
I've been in school for a few years now and I've been having doubts about my career choice. I'm studying to be a veterinary technician. I chose this career because I love animals and I thought it wouldn't affect my anxiety and depression. But I have this nagging thought/feeling/idea that it's not the right career for me. It's like a voice that's always there in the back of my mind. Sometimes it's loud and sometimes it's quiet. When it's loud I get IBS, I feel like crying in the most inappropriate situations, and I feel like self-harming. I have doubts because I'm afraid that an animal will die and it will be my fault. I'm afraid that I'm not strong enough to handle all the stressful situations in a clinic. I can't handle criticism and I know that doctors have certain "condescending" personalities. I take things very personally and I don't understand how some people are able to brush things off. I take things home with me. I also don't do well interacting with people. I don't have good social skills and I don't know if I'll be able to deal with clients. I've also read online about how many people who are vet techs end up changing careers within 5-10 years because they end up getting depressed and they feel overworked with little pay. It makes me think that if I'm already suffering with anxiety and depression then I probably shouldn't enter a career that's going to add on to it even more. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Degrees and/or certificates are but building blocks which can go into many different buildings. If you finish your current degree, you will have proof positive that you can complete goals and you will still have the options of earning a new building block to head your career in a new direction after you know your personal tolerances better.
If you are taking votes, I vote you stay the course and prove to yourself that you can accomplish a goal. Worry about the future when it gets here.
Just voting. . . It remains yours to decide. Gentle support while you sort. Sort freely. Sort often. Listening. . .
Welcome to DS.
I think it would be neat, but volunteer and try it out and see if it fits.
Best wishes as you find your balance.
Try journal writing to help figure out the thought process of what you've shared here.
Begin by identifying the problem, but be careful, it is not always obvious . Secondly, explore all options including doing nothing. Then explore each consequence from each option both good and bad. Finally, explore these consequences with someone you trust (including us) and make a decision. It is always wise to add more information as you act on the options and be free to change directions. If you do this, it may reduce the anxiety of any career choice, and that is a start. Oh, and you may want to begin with prayer.
You said you love animals. What an amazing career to be in as an animal lover! I think you should push past all of the thoughts in your head and complete your studies. And the cool thing about life, is nothing is set in stone, and you can always do something different in a few years, if you want. I am in my late 40's and am now starting my 4th career in my life! Believe in yourself! I do... HUGS!!!
