Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
I too have mental illness. I have anxiety. My overall mental health is good. The only problem I have is Hypothyroidism. Which I have had for 31 years now. I just started experiencing anxiety about 5 years ago. I was going through a lot then. Deaths, menopause and my thyroid got out of whack. But today I'm post menopausal and my thyroid is back on track. So I'm feeling a lot better. It is amazing how your mental health can take a toll on your mental illness for some.
I do a lot of praying and self care and just take everyday one step at a time. The anxiety is uncurable so I just do the best I can and stay positive. It sucks having it. But it's manageable. Well thanks for your comment. Hope you have a very nice day. Italianmomma
It sure has!!!! Hugs too you and have a wonderful day.
What are the five signs of good mental health?
Characteristics of Mental Health
They feel good about themselves.
They do not become overwhelmed by emotions, such as fear, anger, love, jealousy, guilt, or anxiety.
They have lasting and satisfying personal relationships.
They feel comfortable with other people.
They can laugh at themselves and with others.
I think if you have all these five, you don't have mental illness. People with mental illness can have some of these such good relationships, ability to laugh at themselves and with others. I think maybe we can ask question like "How good do you feel your mental health is now? On scales 1 -10. 10 is excellent. Maybe our doctor is the one who can best answer it. Whenever I have to check "How is your mental health?" I always check "poor." Same with physical health.
Thanks for posting that about good Mental Health.
Why is your mental health so poor as you said? And your physical health too? Do you have any mental illnesses? I do anxiety.

I think a person with mental illness can experience some of the signs of good mental health such as having lasting and satisfying personal relationships, feeling comfortable with other people, ability to laugh at themselves and with others. But is they have all those five, I don't think they have mental illness. I could be wrong.
I was hospitalized 6-7 times. They don't admit you in mental hospitals unless you are either suicidal or homicidal. There is this thing called psychosomatic symptoms, meaning physical symptoms that accompany mental illness. When I was first hit with the mental illness, my physical symptoms were dizziness, nausea and fatigue.
I was not aware I was having mental illness until after a doctor gave me physical exams (when I went to see him for dizziness and nausea that would not go away) and asked me a few questions. One of the questions was whether there were anything that bothered me lately (any mental disturbances caused by someone or anything). I told him yes. He then told me I was mentally ill (because there were no signs of physical health issues).
The doctor could see I looked sick but my blood test came out fine. He didn't do X-ray. I was 23 at the time and was put on strong anti-depressants that made me feel more sick (more nauseous and tired). My present physical health problems are aches and pains (fibromyalgia) and fatigue. I get vertigo sometimes which can be from ear infection or touching bacteria. I also have neck arthritis and arthritis at my knees. I am 65 years old. My depressions (or mental) illness started from major depressions that over time turned into bipolar disorders. I have anxiety when dealing with stressful situations such as fighting with the police over traffic tickets, sudden death of loved ones or fear of future.
I believe your right if you have all five signs of good mental health. I think it might just depend on the individual too. I think the second one listed I can totally relate to. That definitely is all me. Because I have the anxiety. So that kinda of puts me in the mental illness category. But the other four I think I'm good. Thanks, Italianmomma
I'm so sorry for all that you have gone through in your life. You have a lot going on with your health. My anxiety started about 5 years ago. I was going through a lot of loss at the time. I was also going through menopause and my thyroid got completely out of whack. Now I feel a lot better. I have bad anxiety flying and driving on freeways. I drive more city streets. Anxiety also runs in my family big time and so does thyroid. They say it could be hereditary. Who knows, I got it and just have to deal with it, because it's not curable just manageable. I noticed when I joined my local church the anxiety kinda of subsided a lot. I guess through praying and doing Bible Studies classes has helped me stay more calm and focused on God. I leave it in his hands. God heals all. I know he has helped me overcome a lot. Prayers and hugs too you.

Sounds like we have a lot of the same fears. I think with flying I feel trapped when they close the door. There's no getting out. So I panic. Driving on the city streets, I know if I have to stop there are safe places too. On the freeway I don't want to pull over its too dangerous. Yes I feel very blessed to have a good support team around me and a great family and some great friends.
And my Bible family is nice to have too. Well good night and sleep well. God bless you. Italianmomma
