Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
Hi Everyone,
I have a heavy story to tell (yet to share it all), however I'm having a problem with "coping" with other peoples anger. I'll get straight to the point; if someone, whether a work colleague, or relative of your husband/wife, was shouting at you and taking their anger out on you ranting about something other than you, what would you do?
I have Autism and in my mid-30's, it's been going on for so long, and I only find out this past summer (I referred myself). (Personally I'm gutted because my parents noticed something different but never looked into it, and you can imagine how tough things became in school..... some teachers implied I was stupid as young as 6, and my confidence vanished, I became sort of a shadow, and isolated myself, even my parents took the teachers' "word" and criticised me. Life could have been better as you can imagine.) I've also developed more anxiety because of several crimes comitted against me, and what Winston Churchill described as his 'black dog' I have had the black dog (depression) following me round for 20 years before a doctor diagnosed me. I have had therapy and am beginning to improve but it's taken a huge amount of time and 3 types of therapy.
It's these crimes; they have put 'fear' into me and that fear plus a high stress level appear when I get shouted at. Of course I haven't done anything wrong, and being a petite woman I sometimes think I'm a target. It's even happened over nice food where someone rants and raves over politics (something they cannot control), they hammer on the table, other people shut down, but that person demands my eye contact because they are looking at me and shouting. The subject isn't about me, but the anger is vented onto me. I feel my stress level go through the roof, other people at the table simply look down and wait for it to pass, but for me this is very overwhelming. I find I can't speak. I don't know how to cope or what to do. All I can think of is to get up and leave the table. There is no point eating as my stomach can't digest the food with me feeling this way....... this is one example out of many. But if you had someone shout at you, how would you cope, what would you do?
Please send me some ideas, I know this is a tricky one, thanks

Just because someone says something does NOT make it your problem. If they are using your ability to focus as a weapon of conversations forced, then you have the ability and right to remove your self from that situation. If leaving seems a bit harsh, consider the option you've tried and know does NOT work.
I have been able to find different ways that work with different people once I found what I was reacting to.
I focused that reaction to a set of option choices, and some are way off but they give you an opportunity to find something that might help.
Best wishes!
