Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

Hi all, I am new to this channel and mostly don't have too much anxiety issues until more recently. I have had more recent anxiety during school as I get closer to graduation and things pick up I feel kind of lost. I am not completely sure I am happy with my choice of career and thinking of the future makes me anxious. I have talked to friends and family about this and they show love and support but obviously can't make my decisions for me.
For more info, I am a female in the mechanical engineering program, I have about 7 more months until I get my degree (which I plan on doing no matter what I decide) I have alot of hobbies that I really love and have always had a dream of persuing. I do art projects and they seem to bring me more fulfillment than working (I have had both regular jobs and engineering jobs). I think that I could make it as an artist but the idea of doing that full time and giving up on a more stable career makes me nervous for financial reasons. My boyfriend of 5 years supports my dreams but he is also a student and has a few more years to go to get his degree, I don't want to be a burden on him and our relationship (we do plan to get married). I don't think I have severe anxiety but this has been plaguing me and giving me anxiety for a long time, I would like some unbiased input. Have any of you had major decision based anxiety? What do you do?

My day...today...misplaced my debit card...didn't realize it until I got to the register after shopping to a full cart. Used a different debit card and pulled apart everything looking for missing debit card before I left parking lot. Got home, dropped keys. So now I have a missing debit card, missing keys. A full cartload to unload and put away. I got everything put away.Dumped purse for a...

My own anxiety is quite severe and decisions don't even need to be major to trigger my decision-making anxiety. I can agonize over whether to get the blue one or the red one. For trivial decisions such as which color, I flip a coin. The color of my new appliance won't matter much by the end of the first use.
For major decisions, such as whether I want to continue on my current career path, I more often go the path of least resistance. Great jobs are evolved, not found. Revamping my career path at every shift in my mood is a sure route to instability. Finishing that degree doesn't decide your future. It is only proof that you can finish a project and a single brick in the path of your life.

For what it's worth
When I have set out to make a living out of my most passionate hobbies, I found myself grieving the loss of the hobby as the pressure to buy groceries started turning my most beloved hobby into **work**. These days I guard the cathartic value of my hobbies and just let **work** be a four letter word that ends in a hard sound. Just. . .
Your college should have career counseling and maybe they do what is called aptitude testing. To see if your aptitude lies with engineering or what. Many students start to feel scared in their final year of college because real life and working a job is around the corner. The comfy womb of college is almost over and a big change is coming. It is normal to feel anxious about upcoming change. I'd suggest you sit down with pen to paper and write out why you feel anxious and dig deep to see is this just fear around the upcoming change of graduation. Or what.
If you think you are not really cut out for engineering, I'd suggest you get a full time job upon graduation and see how you like it. Do your art at nights and weekends. Many people find their hobbies or artistic outlets bring them more fulfillment than their regular jobs. Hobbies also take our minds off our troubles and bring us peace inside. Jobs as the fulfillment of our lives is kind of a myth, although some find it. I am saying this because I assume you are making good enough grades to graduate in the program. People who have no aptitude for engineering usually do not have success with grades and coursework. Art jobs pay little money in a lot of cases although one could switch gears and get a teaching degree in art history or high school art teaching. Where I live, graphic design is very difficult to make money at, the jobs are often freelance, and low paid unfortunately.
I realize that this is probably minor anxiety that comes with leaving college. I appreciate all of the great tips, you have given me more to think about and I hope I can do it in a cool minded impartial way. I think that I will agonize for awhile but probably will end up getting a full time job after I graduate to try it out. I just don't want to regret not following my dreams and resenting myself later. I will try your idea of writing out everything and see if it helps too. Again, thank you for the third party insight, going around and around in my own head makes me anxious and I think hearing from other people definitely helps. Happy holidays.
