Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
What I've heard most is what rskb suggests - try to be in the moment. One technique to help you with this is to take a few deep breaths and then notice five things you see around you. And then five things you hear. Five things you smell. Five things you feel. If you've still got a monkey jumping about in your brain, find four different things to see around you, four different things you hear - and so forth.
Generally, by the time you get to 1 new thing you see, etc. you're in the present.
Some people also swear by the "what's the worst thing that could happen?" exercise but for me, I usually go right to catastrophizing and then get hung up on that! : (
It tends to be better for me to think "What's the best thing that could happen" and visualize a smooth move.
I think most people get monkey mind during a big transition like a move or break up or new relationship or new job, etc. You've likely done this before and likely learned you can trust yourself to find solutions. And you'll do it again this time. Whatever comes up, you'll handle.
Best of luck to you.
I have to go to physical therapy and was feeling anxious last week. I had forgotten to take my Xanax before going and took it after I got there. It takes a few minutes for it to kick in. I have taught myself to look around and name all the colors I can see... each color 1 time using shades of colors (light blue, dark blue, dusty blue, etc.) if there are not many different colors to see. I used this technique while waiting for the Xanax to work.
I like word games. If I am some place where there are signs or wall deco with wording, I take a word or two and try to make as many words as I can think of out of the lettering.
Basically anything I can think of to keep my mind from racing into the future or strolling through 'bad memory lane'.
