Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

I'm a 22 year old college student and have dealt with anxiety for most of my life. For the best several years, my anxiety has gotten increasingly worse, and right now, it's at its worst ever. The thing that scares and worries me the most is this feeling of detachment I get. I spend much of my day feeling like I am a zombie, going through the motions but not experiencing anything. I feel like I am in a fog. I get this way anytime I am around people, especially during my classes at school, and it is nearly impossible to focus or get anything from the professor's lectures when I feel this way. It's so frustrating and I am worried I am going to fail my classes.
No matter, what I do, I cannot bring myself down to reality. The ONLY thing I have found that helps me is to listen to my iPod and do some stretching/yoga for at least 10 minutes. Also, (this is weird), if I can cry, I usually feel better after. But I cannot do either of those things while I am in class. I've always been reluctant to try medication, but if there is something out there that can help this feeling I am having, I would take it. I just want to feel alive and present in my life. I am getting so depressed because I'm worrying I'll never get anywhere with my life the way I am now.
Sorry for making that so long...I guess my question is, A. Has anyone felt like this before, and how did you deal with it? And B. Are there any medications that can help with this? Do you think an SSRI would help? My Dr also wanted me to try Klonopin, but I am scared...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

Are you able to see a psychiatrist? or counsellor to help you make a decision on a plan of action?...sometimes it's easier to talk to someone rather than just do it all on your own.
Best of luck and keep up posted.
When I was first diagnosed with PTSD, I was on Zoloft for about a year. That did help, but regardless, I had to eventually start facing my fears, and learning how to handle things unmedicated.
I dont know if there is a medication for detachment in particular. I think it simply falls under the anxiety category.
I would absolutely talk to your doc about this.
alot around my girlfriend and my family I dont know why. Also sometimes around strangers I feel spaced out or detached and it drives me nuts. I am on 200mg of zoloft which used to work great but not anymore. Also I was on klonopin for 15 years but wanted to see if I could get off it!That may have been a mistake because I get that fog so much more now that Im not working. So Im thinking of going back on klonopin to see if that helps makes the fog go away.
Best of luck to you.
I'm on Celexa. I'm not sure it completely helps with the fog, but it takes a bit of the edge off so I'm in a better mood and less nervous, which helps me break out of my shell a little bit more. It helped me to realize that I'll always be a very internal person, a daydreamer, but that if I can help control my anxiety I can start achieving new goals.
And I know what you mean about crying - it's one of the most beneficial way for me to calm down and feel better. :) Good luck, and best wishes for being courageous to work toward finding some help.
I've known US members where the doctors have suddenly said they won't prescribe and that leaves their patients in withdrawal.
Some of the anti-depressants can be used for anxiety - you may need to try a few, some can actually make you feel more anxious.
One med that is of a different group is inderal (proprananol) - that is a beta blocker which is used for people having to do public speaking. It's not seadating or addictive and I think you can take it for long periods - I took it for several years. Not something to stop suddenly though.
I have a doctor's appointment soon and might try another medication (I was on Prozac for awhile, but the side effects were too much). I guess it's just a matter of trial and error to see what works. And I am also going to continue to find ways besides medication to hopefully alleviate these feelings of detachment.
Thank you all so much again for your input. It means a lot!
