'Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom' Soren Kirkegaard
I remember the first time I read that and the profound feeling i got. I'd always heard negative meanings to the word 'anxiety'; Fear of the unknown, overwhemling emotions, lost feeling. this was the first on i read that actually had a positive 'feeling' to it. Like a rush of wind it knocked me down in its truth. Many times my anxiety was because of too many options, too much freedom. 'should i do this? should i clean? should i take this class? should i...should i...should i' This led to a shutdown and i'd end up doing nothing (productive, TV is not productive).
Worse, this led to depression because i couldn't even do a simple task and just fell like a house of cards at the first slight breeze. This one little quote (from a very good philosopher, the father of existentialism) gave me a new view that my problem wasn't the issue but the FREEDOM of choice in how i'd respond. It hasn't removed problems but at least gave me a new way to look at them and i have progressed simply by making the issue less 'dizzy'.
It just seems some of us DEMAND an action so much we terrify ourselves into our little rabbit holes until the problem goes away. But unfortunately the problem sneaks back and many times catches us before we can hide. I personally want to get strong enough so that when problems come lurking they know to stay out of my garden.
I hope this can help someone, thanks for listening
