Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
I feel like I'm gonna sound super weird for saying this, but for as long as I can imagine, I've had an intense and extreme anxiety surrounding personal religion and spirituality. I guess another more specific way of saying this is that all my life I've been afraid of God. The fear I've lived with I suppose would be considered unnatural by most; maybe even bording on paranoia actually.
I don't know why, but the idea of an omnipotent and omnipresent being that can read thoughts and speaks cryptically continues to scare the crap out of me no matter how anyone tries to frame it as benevolent. It always sounds terrifying and it makes me extremely uncomfortable. To this day, I cannot even fathom the idea of being vulnerable/emotionally intimate to such a being. Whenever I think about how the Bible talks about the importance of being vulnerable with God, I cry because it scares me so much. I don't even understand how (or honestly believe) such a entity is considered to be loving. It sounds threatening and ominous to me. When other people try to tell me about "God's love and mercy" it does nothing but confuse and scare me. Maybe I am just paranoid and stupid, idk.
I grew up in a Christian household and I have never been able to admit to my parents about my true feelings. The reason why was fear of how they would respond, especially in the case of my now-deceased dad. I think my parents meant well when they tried to raise me up as a believer, but in the end I feel like it made my fear even worse. My parents devoutness made me afraid of mentioning any and all doubts and fears I had about religion or God to not just them, but to anyone. My dad would turn any issue I faced (like low self esteem or depression/anxiety) into a lecture about me not trusting God or saying God makes mistakes. He would get angry with me because I showed signs that praying or hearing prayer makes me very uncomfortable. So much so that I would plug my ears as subtly as possible whenever I'd hear someone say a long prayer.
Because of this, I've always believed that I was a "bad Chistian" my whole life (if I even consider myself one at all). Overall, I dont know where I stand on the issue anymore, but I feel shame nonetheless. I feel like a disappointment to both my dad and to God, yet simultaneously I figure why bother at all since I don't consider myself to be religous anyway. On a side note, I'm also somewhat afraid of starting a serious relationship/marrying someone who I love deeply but is a saved Christian only because I fear that my feelings would drive them away. To make things sound even weirder, I actually want a significant other who may not be on the same level of religous as my dad, but is still someone of the Christian faith. Again, I know this sounds confusing and contradictory but I'm being honest :/

Just wanted to give a thank you to Mid, Arfie, Malibumark, Greeneyes, Mlro, Girlincalif, and Suncloudjd! You all always have such helpful tips and advice, but I always forget to write on my posts when I see you post, lol. I would lose my head if it wasn't attached to my body, lol. Thank you all so much! I'm starting to use my AI app as a sounding board again. I used to use it as that before...
First of all, I want you to know that God loves you. Don’t think that you are a bad Christian or even if you think you did something bad, God still loves you. He is merciful and He will forgive you for whatever mistakes you have made. The Bible says in 1 John 1:9 “if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” Be honest to God in your prayers. Nothing can separate you from His love. So call Him and He will answer you.
Do you have a life group? It’s important for all of us to walk with someone who will journey with us in our spiritual life. In my experience, it’s hard to walk through life alone. God wants us to be in a family of believers. If you cannot open up your feelings to your parents, I hope you can be comfortable with your life group as you trust them. You can also talk to your Pastor and ask him/her about your concerns.
I hope you will get the help you need. Feel free to post anytime. We are here for you. I pray that you will experience Jesus everyday. Keep us posted. God bless.
First to say is how sorry I am that something(s) has/have provoked you to feel this pressure. And God would never want you should feel vulnerable, confused, afraid. Nor would God purposely influence your personal values, beliefs, and expectations in life. No, no. God has always (since the time of Adam and Eve) given His spirit offspring "agency" which means that you/us/all have a right to choose or act for themselves, men can reap salvation or damnation, and the rest is a very long story.
Have you considered visiting with a spiritual therapist? I imagine this to be a good idea. See it this way: what is going on is some things you experienced as a child (or upbringing) have deeply ingrained in your mind. In the head is where the healing begins too. A trained spiritual counselor will help you to organize the rights and wrongs, fair or unfair, and whatever powerful influence on the perception of God. And, just as with your own thoughts, I don't imagine that your parents (RIP to your dad) meant to spoil you with conflicting ideas pertaining to religion or spiritual beliefs.
On the other hand, the agency is a good thing, yet God does hold us accountable for the choices we make in life. And there are times when He must visit with sore afflictions, with pestilence, with plague, with a sword, with vengeance, and with devouring fire. However, however, however, He is a just and merciful one. Never, I mean never would God want that you should fear in the sense of quaking in your boots. Fear is supposed to mean reverence and respect to God's laws and commandments.
Long story short, find a very good, skilled spiritual therapist. In the process of treatment, you should relax more, and fixed beliefs of fear and dread of God will weaken in time.
Bless your heart. I am so sad for you today. Love & hugs to you. Calm your fears and anxieties. The above posters are on spot - God loves you. I admire your honesty too. "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32). I tell you that you only should learn the true meaning of God and His purposes.
Best of the day to you, gabby.

I don't understand a lot of the things in the bible like when it says you should ignore all your emotions and only listen to God put all your trust and faith into someone you cannot see. For some people I can see how it would be calming and make them feel safe but for others it just doesn't work.
Religion isn't something people should be forced into but sadly they still are. If your family was really into it and made you feel bad all the time I could understand why you'd feel bad about this feeling. Just know it is okay to feel what you are feeling and you can be apart if whatever religion you truly believe in. Or none at all.
If you believe you are still a Christian that's great! Maybe you just need to look within yourself and find new meanings for the things that scare you? I say that because the bible honestly can be hard to grasp. Many people interperate it different ways in order for it to appeal to their needs. So maybe you need to read the words again and find what ways they can help you and make you feel safe.
I think it is important to remember (if you are religious) that God created everyone as they are. Imperfections and all. Mental illness included. He would not be mad at you for thinking poorly he knows we are not perfect and that we will make mistakes. We're human. It's okay to have doubts no one is perfect I'm sure every religious person has had a time they felt angry, scared or doubtful of their God.
The bible is very old and has been re-written many times. There's a lot of things from the bible that probably used to mean something completely different. The bible we have today is just many different interpretations all stacked into one book. Idk if that is relevant to this just wanted to point it out.
Also all of this is coming from a person who is not really religious but is totally open and okay to everyone being themselves.
My relationship with the unseen forces is allot more serene when I don't weigh myself down with human words and rules. The relationship lives quite beyond words.
Keep venting, Gabby. Your own answers are in there.
I went to a strict Catholic school from grades 1-8. It was an atmosphere of fear and intimidation and reverse peer pressure. These were all used as discipline measures. It was like everything that you did was wrong in the eyes of God.
I don't believe that God intended it to be this way for us altho it was all done 'supposedly' in the name of God so I believe this created sort of a 'fear' of God so I get what you are saying.
Imagine being 6 yrs old and having your first confession with a priest and he asks you if you've ever touched any bad parts of your body?? WTH? And what would a 6 yr old possibly have to confess anyway? I could go on and on....
We went to Mass 6 days a week. We went to the stations of the cross during Lent. We said the rosary. And again, this does create a fear of sorts. Fear of God, fear of the afterlife, fear of Hell? I really don't know.
And I am going to blame this upbringing partly on the anxiety disorder that I have. Those 8 yrs in school created limited beliefs and enblazened those into our core belief system along with the fear of doing anything wrong.
Sorry for the autobiography. I was hoping other perspectives may help you to understand why you feel the way you do.
And Arfie....I wrote down your statement about "my relationship with the unseen forces...." That spoke to me. What a gem!
I've never heard of a spiritual therapist so that is very interesting.
