Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...
So I'm new here, forgive me if I rant at all. I'm wondering if anyone has advice or experience with social anxiety? Specifically the kind that you get when with close friends and family. I'm fine with strangers, coworkers, etc, but people who I'm supposed to be closest with, there are huge walls. Super shy. Most would describe me as a total extrovert, except my friends who would say I'm super quiet and reserved. Don't understand it. Super frustrating at times. Have tried several counselors and the sort. Was Hoping maybe just having some like minded people might help :) thanks in advance!

When i was in the ER February 16th 2025, i was being admitted to ICU where i was for 3 weeks, then had to relearn to walk for 3 weeks in another hospital rehab floor, the nurse told me something that made me feel for over 18 months now that i was finally *safe*. She told me that the guy who raped and beat me 21 years ago now almost 20 years at that time, was in prison as of a month before that...

Sometimes, I think I have ODD. I can be oppositional. It seems that the only times that I feel like cleaning are when I should be doing something else or I have to go somewhere. Well, not everytime but most of the time. Yesterday, I was supposed to be doing online training for work but instead, I decided to work on my kitchen table. Most of the time, I don't know where to start and give...

You've taken the important first step in writing it out.
Best wishes as you find your better balance with this particular type of anxiety.
I favor the term, "Intimacy Issues" for my own rendition of this piece of social anxiety. Coworkers, etc., come with culturally constructed boundaries that help me feel safe with minimum effort on my part. The very nature of friendship, family, etc., violate my social distances every time. Add in my "aversion to touch" and I get downright hostile and explosive at times.
After 40 years of marriage, I still have this problem with my hubby and most of my closest friends live on other continents. Sometimes it is even hard for me to hug my GKs when they need a hug. Sigh. . . Works in progress. . . It's not about being perfect. It's about working it out.
I struggled with social anxiety when I was in college. I was born and raised in a rural area and then I went to a huge city to study for college. It was a big adjustment for me. I was so nervous to talk to a group of people but I met a friend who was also in my class and she encouraged me not to be shy. She helped me especially when we were in a group. She’s a nice person and she knew that I was not comfortable. It was not easy but I thank God that because of her I slowly overcome my social anxiety.
It would be helpful if you have someone who will encourage you when anxiety attacks or feel free to share it with us. We are here for you. Praying for you, God bless.
