Accepting anxiety as harmeless, even though it seems dangerous at times such as chest pains and tightness of breath, for example, allows you to avoid your natural reaction to it, such as resistance. And this natural reaction stems from FEAR of your anxiety which increases your anxiety a great deal. Anxiety without fearing it and without resisting it will be less intense and you save energy thus making the initial anxiety less draining.
I often use the analogy of a surfer surfing a wave (anxiety) to the shore (safety). When the surfer reaches the beach and turns around he/she sees the wave ebbing away. Imagine the difference between riding the wave on a surboard and struggling against it in the water.
Usually, persistent anxiety stems from an underlying depression which stems from low feelings about yourself. To better understand where these feelings originate you can go to: http://gavas.com/ANXIETY_DEPRESSION.htm now, and then get the book "FEELING GOOD" by Dr David Burns later. Learning how to change negative self worth issues into positive affirmations about yourself will take you a long way in your recovery from anxiety.
