Good. you are on the right track. I know you just had them to take in certain instances-so you are not addicted and need to taper off.

I did the same with my percadan when I had cancer. I have no trouble with most pain killers but that one felt toooooooooooo good. I get it!

and don't do this for anyone but you. Our addict/alcoholic minds will seek out people around us, professionals and otherwise, who will support our illness. Do it for you howtolive...pray and meditate on what is right for you-not me, not AA, not anyone but YOU.

KK, I did it for me and only me. You did help me see clearly though. It's all about perspective. I was justifying why I needed to keep a stash of pills in my purse.

Not only was klonopin an easy "acceptable" way for me to numb my emotions, it was a band-aid for my alcohol induced anxiety and withdrawal, thus an enabler to my drinking. I will HAVE TO think twice next time I consider a drinking binge because my panic and withdrawal IS MUCH worse than the cravings leading up to it.

Who else can own up to this misuse of prescription meds. I am a case in point and not afraid to admit my flawed thinking. Anyone, anyone?

How many alcoholics on here would not have considered taking a pill to numb the emotions they are unaccustomed to dealing with, especially those alcoholics who are newly sober like me.

I am sure there are plenty of people who are susceptible to addiction in the manner or extreme that I am, but I am fairly sure that a large number of people are abusing it even if only mildly.

What in the world did people do before benzos?

I do know though that if we are/were addicted to alcohol the same GABBA receptor are set off with benzo's.....most of us crave benzo's. Go to your doctor, see if you can find one who agrees with this, who deals with addictions.

Don't listen to me, I am just a random person on a alcoholism board. I hope to plant a seed in someone's head though to investigate further-and give thought when they pop their benzo for anxiety. Go talk to someone who is well read in current addiction literature and research. All of you. I am no one except a fellow drunk who see this.

the usual protocol for alcohol calls for the use of a librium or ativan as means of warding off possible seizure. This usually discontinued by tapering off over 5-7 days. The previous post was about someone with a HISTORY of anxiety and panic attacks. Your right about the GABBA receptors however for those with true anxiety disorder... what then.

Well nodp, there are other meds that may not effect her that way. I have anxiety disorders but every pill i was allergic to or felt TOOOO good... until whatever thing they put me on now. unless there is a medical reason (Like you have to be weened off) I really don't understand the problem. Um did i miss something?

I highly doubt someone is going to listen to me who is taking these regularly. They may think about it though. Who knows. If they do, I urge them to get with their doc to taper them and get on something non-addictive. If their doc says no, what the heck am I going to say? I cannot control the world, and docs-especially ones in psychiatry, are not always predictable and each seems on a different page with this kind of thing. Most shrinks who deal with addictions know we are full of crap in this area, our minds are alcoholic and addictive in their tendencies, and see the danger in these drugs for alcoholics.

I know so many recovering people who are in denial about this though and so I guess I should have known this anger was coming.

I am pretty sure those who are taking them once in awhile will not be in danger if they think about the idea that they should perhaps consider other ways to manage their anxiety.

I have made many people very angry. It is hard for me as I don't feel comfortable being attacked. But Thank God Howtolive tossed those.

Actually, I was just thinking of that winged. If you've been on them for a while then you can die without tapering. A doctor's advice is good when it comes to taper. They HAVE to listen to your request to taper. If it's just an occasional thing then you're probably safe. Anyhow, if this feels like the right decision then I support you 100%.
