Have you had enough yet? That was what my AA sponsor asked me when I absolutely, positively hit my "Low"!

I went through a 4 day detox at the hospital having gained a room by being admitted through the ER. I was drunk at the time so they gave me IV fluids to reduce the alcohol in my system. I was given meds to help me through the withdrawals so it was a piece of cake.

All we can do here is give you encouragement and tell you the kinds of things that helped us, the rest is up to you.

For this alcoholic-life is SO much better without alcohol.

I remember hitting bottom rock, then suddenly it made all sense. “I am in such a mess. If I don’t do something, I will literally end my life” creeped into my mind. God then began to do a redeeming work in my life and God begin to transform me from the inside out. I was at the verge of losing everything and all changed, because of Jesus.

I pray this will be a day for you Mike, that you will look back and able to say the same thing and praise God for His goodness of turning things around. Now it doesn’t mean the road will be easy but it is worth it without the consequence of the addiction. I think God can do ANYTHING with one’s life only if we are willing to surrender and let him take over.

You said you detoxed, did you do any further rehab? Many people transition to an Intensive Out-Patient (IOP) program (Usu. 4 hours of group therapy, and teaching sobriety techniques) after inpatient treatment. Some just go from detox to IOP. Other options are meds that can *help* with cravings (Naltrexone, Acamprosate), or one that will make you sick if you drink (Antabuse). AA frowns on the use of meds for antiquated reasons. If things are hostile at home anyways and you can't take time off of work, you might consider talking to your wife and moving into a sober living home to keep you accountable. You will be subject to random drug testing. AA recommends 90 meetings in 90 days. SMART Recovery is an alternative to AA, but it's not as widespread. It's more of a positive psychology spin rather than a concrete step by step program. I find workbooks helpful as a supplement. There are quite a few available on Amazon. I also like the app SoberGrid. It has the user do quick "rehabby" stuff daily: check-in, inspiration article, gratitude list, posting comments. There is an option to find local users if you want to chat/meet up with sober people nearby. There are other apps, but this is my favorite. I feel that it helps to fill up all your free time with sobriety stuff at the beginning.

Where do you live? I find it hard to believe there's no one to talk to. If you have internet there are online groups for AA. Also, many clergy are versed in addiction guidance
