Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
I used to belong to this group and left when the website changed. I decided to start a new account and start over. My drinking is becoming much worse. If I have been drinking the night before and there is booze around in the morning I will drink it. Hair of the dog.
My husband and son think I have a mental condition. But I know that that condition is "she drinks" too much. I think it is also worse because I have lost 30 lbs since Jan. which means I don't eat much. I drink the same. I lost my mom in Sept. and I have been unhappy in my marriage for some time but I really am trying to work on that too.
Anyway.... I know I need to get better, do better, be better. Before shit really really hits the fan. I have had some things happen that have effected my family. My behavior mostly. Nothing I have done to them personally.
My husband drinks and when we have big bottles of vodka around it is too tempting for me. As long as I know it's out and where it's out I will be swigging. He knows I have a problem with too much consumption. This is not new. He thinks hiding the bottle when he has had enought will help but it does not. By the time he is done I have already had my drinks. Hell he probably poured me some drinks. I thought about getting him a liquor cabinet with a lock. They are hella expensive. I decided on these liquor bottle locks. I just got them in the mail. They come with a key. Will this help? Beats me. Will it be embarressing that I have to give him this. Maybe. But I have a teenage daughter and 20 yr old that likes to steal drinks so I can always say it's to keep his drinks safe from the teens. You know for when we have company and they look at us funny.
This is my first new step in staying sober. Not looking for lectures, dates, Just comfort, understanding, advice.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

Unfortunately, your husband and son, are probably right. Alcoholism is listed as a mental health disorder because it is triggered by underlying emotional problems. I was diagnosed with depression and ptsd while in outpatient treatment. I was treated for those problems which made sobriety alot easier for me. Regular attendance at AA meetings and doing the steps, were a huge part of that treatment. I had a sponsor who was available to me anytime day or night. I remember having a conversation with him at midnight once after having a huge argument with my wife and I had a craving to drink like no other, but his wisdom and compassion got me through the ordeal.
Long story short, I could not have done it without help. I am glad I got it because now I have a great life and I have never been happier.
It sounds like your husband might also have a drinking problem. Wouldn't it be nice if you could both quit together! I see many couples at AA meetings and sobriety seems to have healed them! They are happy beyond measure and I wish the same for you.
Good luck on your road to recovery and may you find peace and happiness along the way.
God Bless
Locking bottles or hiding them from sight doesn’t make any difference to someone who is a serious drinker. The change needs to come from within with a clear and deep understanding of this multi-faceted dilemma. I hope you find your solution soon.
You are badass! Don’t let anyone or your own inner voice tell you any different!
In this arena you never want to count your chickens before they hatch, but congratulations on that very big step. Having that backbone to come here and share that with this support group is a good sign.
Losing a pound a week without trying is dangerous. You know that, right? Grief is powerful shit. I, too, coupled malnutrition with alcohol use as a grieving strategy. Sounds like you have medical complications and just stopping cold-turkey could be very dangerous.
I will check in here and follow up with a more detailed response if you would do the favor of answering a couple of questions....
What is the family history of alcohol use/abuse in your family?
Why do you think you drink? and why has it escalated?
Anything else about how you've gotten to where you are?
You can answer here or by private message, if you'd prefer.
Ton's of good advice above. Agree with Bob, that having a lot of alcohol around is probably not ideal, but your toolbox needs to be far more about you choosing to abstain and being authentic to yourself than avoiding the seductive power of that first/next drink.
This is going to feel overwhelming and impossible at times. That is normal.
Even though this probably sounds impossible....you are not alone; we have been there - and worse!
may the force be with you

I try not to think about drinking and stay busy. So far I’m ok but I’m sure I will cave at some point. Life just sucks for me right now, the stress feels unbearable at times and drinking makes it all go away if only for a night.
I wish you the best and everyone else out there, we should all feel worthy enough to do this for ourselves and our loved ones, right?
