This is an article from the AA grapevine which I recently found. It is specifically talking about an atheists view on step 3 which is particularly interesting for me. However I think it contains quite a lot about the action of step 3 that would be of interest to anybody either for their own recovery or helping others with step3. Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist. Atheism is contrasted with theism, which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists.
Addiction is something that takes power to control. Once an addict, always an addict. The power to control an addiction comes from thought processes, being able to stop thoughts before an action, in this case the action is a drink or whatever the drug of choice is.
That is where the whole "higher power" idea comes into play. If that power comes from within, to change one's thoughts, then it seems to me its very similar to a belief in such higher power(s). Used as a thought stopping action.

I think getting caught up in step three is pointless. I was simply asked to make a decision that i didnt know it all, well kinda, i borrowed my sponsors God for a few minutes and moved on. Being humble and know that I aint about nothing, that's what counts these days.
IMO getting to step 11,,, where it states "TO IMPROVE", that's the key.
My definition of agnostic is one who has no belief that there is or isn't a god. I don't know....I lean more to atheism but I don't know or have faith there is NO god either. Both theism and atheism to me need some sort of faith.
