Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.
I really think this needs to go farther in mandatory informing those attending meetings that there may or may not be sex offenders &/or violent criminals present. People take it for granted that 12step programs are safe when they are anything but... this is also not one sided, sometimes it's 16 year olds who may look in their 20's (or lying about their age: gotta love anonymity) trying to seduce older attendee(s), who discovering the truth after the fact, becomes a potential "sex offender". I have seen it work both ways.
Also~ the PROBLEM is 12 step affiliates letting any judicial authority even be able to sentence ANY offenders to meetings, since this is very clearly against their own traditions (specifically 10 & 11). AND 12 step ideaology has not proven itself (statistically through evidence based research) to be either appropriately successful punitively or rehabilitatively... 12 step ideaology may be used as part of treatment planning, but is NOT inherently treatment. It is being used as such unethically by people who are either too lazy to provide comprehensive treatment, or who don't understand what actual treatment is.
The worst part of this is: I can't change my experience with 12 step ideaology~ I can logically and rationally respond instead of explosively reacting, but I still feel triggered and violated.

Is anyone here allergic to Sulfa that is currently taking Diamox? I have been diagnosed with IH now for almost 2 years. I am allergic to Sulfa drugs meaning that my throat will swell up so my Neurologist put me on Topamax. I was suffering from major loud whoosing noises and the topamax helped that but everyday I still hear those mainly between 6 - 12 pm. I am at my wits end and have not went...

Judges sentence people to go to AA meetings if that person has had issues with drinking and causing problems because of their drinking.
They do not sentence violent criminals to go to AA meetings just because they are violent criminals.
Yes we meet a cross-section of society at meetings - and we are inclined to meet people who have had some major problems with the law. Drunks can get into a lot of trouble - but it is the drinking that gets them sentenced to meeting.
Judges sentence drunks to go to AA because it works quite well for some - and for some it does not.
Tis sad that your experience with a twelve step program has been bad.
Obviously the current laws on the books are not enough to stop predatory actions by these people. What makes one think that yet another law will?

Not a very nice comment is it? I agree with the others here- I'm sure I walk by sex offenders in Walmart and eat lunch next to them too. But that is not the fault of AA.
I would however wish you good mental health. If people trigger you, I hope you are seeing a professional. Seems like you've had some emotional trauma in your life. That, of course, is an outside issue in AA.
Personally I've found a solution in the rooms of AA. I go in with eyes wide open, same as I would in any public forum. I look to the best, and to what helps me, and leave the rest.
