It's been 2 years and 4 months since my DUI, 2 years and 3 months since I lost my job, 2 years and 2 months since I lost my apartment, 2 years and 1 month since I quit drinking, 1 year 11 months since I completed my DUI classes, I year 1 month since I was denied entry in England, 4 months since I got off probation (1 1/2 years early due to good behavior) and the ONLY thing good to come in all that time is I got married 5 months ago. And, I can't be with my Husband yet because he's English and in England and with my record it will be difficult for me to get into the UK and for him to come here...I have to have a good job...which I haven't been able to get with my record.

I know it's my fault that I got the DUI...and that is part of why the UK sent me packing...but I just feel BEAT DOWN!! Like I take 2 steps forward and 3 back and I WANT A FUCKING DRINK!! Sobriety has got me no where so far!!!

I just left a bar...where I was visiting with some friends, and I didn't have a drink. But I was feeling like one, so I came home.

I have been going to AA and I do have a sponsor, but it's not really working out.

Suggestions any one????

Some times folks dont see posts too often on the "advice" page. I put a link over on discussions for ya.

As for the past little while, I have to believe a LOT of good has happened that would NEVER had happened had you been drinking.

I'm sorry for your troubles, but I hope you know that they will work themselves out in time. Sometimes quicker, sometimes longer, but they typically always work themselves out.

Oh honey, I didn't see this. I know you're havin a rough time being away from your husband but you know damn well that having a drink will not solve your job problem, nor will it get you to your husband any quicker. In fact, it will prolong your absence from him and you'll be less likely to get a job.

Stay away from the bars K. Remember you even said it you can't be with your husband "YET!". Don't make it any longer by screwin up and getting drunk. It will work out as long as you maintain your sobriety!

I remember you, but it's been awhile. I'm sorry for the rough time, but you know deep down that alcohol won't improve the situation. Best advice I can give is to follow a plan that will put you together with your husband. I'm sure you're already working on this, but there are steps to take and the sooner you take them, the quicker the two of you will be together (whether it's over here or over there). Like HC said, the alcohol may throw a wench in this plan, so don't go there. And feel free to come to this forum when you're frustrated.

If things are not working out with your sponsor then get another one. The reason that you are feeling this way is because you are not spiritually fit. Where are you with the steps?

You must realise that whilst all these problems are difficult, you do not need to drink over any of them. When we recover, we can face anything that happens in our lives without even thinking about drinking - please work the steps so that you may recover.

It seems that your problems were caused by drinking. You stopped drinking and believed your problems would just go away? A wonderful thing happened to you...you fell in love and got married! You have challenges in life, some of your own making, but that IS life. Hopefully your husband can help you get a good attorney to work through the legal issues. Don't set yourself up for a bout of drinking by saying "hey sobriety sucks"....it does't...this will pass if you work to get through it. If your sponsor isn't working out...get a new one Is drinking going to do anything positive for you. Solve any of your problems that drinking got you into in the first place......

I can feel your pain in this post. I hate that we have to have pain, but we do. All of us are going through something -- I think this is why I can feel the pain in what you write. The Liquor will not make the pain go away; it will only intensify it. My suggestion is to keep posting, and to grab ahold to a power greater than you -- real hard. I can't move your pain, the alcohol won't move it, but there is one who can guide you through the process when we are not around.

Please find another sponsor who can guide you through the steps, and please keep posting. Together we will make it through the process.

All good advice here in spots. All I'll add is there is nothing so bad that a drink can't make worse.

Thank you all for your sound words of wisdom. I know my higher power brought me to AA and here for a reason, and that reason is times like this...when that "stinkin' thinkin'" gets the best of ALL of us.

I'm no where near alcohol right now and besides, I'm thinking, "WTF was I thinking???" lol One day at time, I know.

I think hanging around a bar , especially in this frame of mind is setting yourself up to drink.
Second , why can't your husband come to where you are?
Maybe another sponsor? Don't give up.

Life can be hard. I get so discouraged because of my own foolishness while drinking. Lost my licence, wife, kids career. Can't get across the boarder to visit someone I love, can't get a job that pays anymore than minumum wage...etc. But I found my way into recovery. Drinking will only take things away. Never gives you anything good. you may have to wait awhile for the things you want. The prices that we sometimes pay can really make life a lot tougher, but your alive. you could have been dead in that car, or killed someone else and have to live with that guilt the rest of your life. I know, I sound like I'm preaching, but just take a few minutes and write down all the things that you are blessed with. I wish you a good recovery, and a sober life, James
