Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

I have suffered from anxiety and panic since I was 22 years old, I have drank alcohol since about 18. I am now 33. I have been on and off Prozac for years it realy works for panic attacks the only thing is the month plus of pure hell you have to go through as the medicine re-wire your brain. as of date I am over 2 years with out prozac and was doing ok I went to see a psych. doctor at around the 2 year mark because I was freaking out about what happens when we die and living forever in the after life(yes I Know) but he explained to me that if I indeed made it 2 whole years with out the meds then I realy didnt need them and that my thoughts about the afterlife was normal. eventually I move d on from that and my brain got preoccupied with other thing and I did it with no meds, of course I had days where whwer I felt strange but I was able to just let it pass and then things was all better. after awhile I started exercising eating better lost some weight, I was feeling wonderful I was even drinking ALOT!!! less, got a new guy in my life and everything. me and friends went to new york soo after and for no reaseon me and one of them binged a half gallon of bacardi gold (which is what I normally drink) in a 24 hour period, needless to say the next day DEHYDRATION, FULL BLOWN PANICK ATTACKS,sick for 7 days and for some reason for the last month and a half its been no drinking during the week because Im sick and then drinking way to much over the weekends and not realy meaning to. this last past 4th of july weekend I drank about a 5th of amsterdamn vodka ( i dont even drink clear liquor) I awoke to vomiting dizziness depression i had to stay in bed all weekend I could barely eat anything cying anxiety the whole nine.it has been the same since ( day 7) some days are better than others I also get internal shakes, Im having stomache issues, I feel hungry and full at the same time. I chew but feel like I cant swallow throat feel like pebbles in the right side weak arm and legds feel like they are made of lead headaches (tension) Depression on and off. Im scared I know most of the symptoms are due to withdrawl, but Im scared I may have damaged my brain to the point I will need Prozac again. I have been praying not because I simply cant go back through the hell the meds put you through these 7 days have been enough, is there any one out there who can relate will the panic and axiety leave with the withdrawls, is it normal for withdawls to last 7 days or over that. has any one been through this and was able to beat the anxiety/panic/depression with out meds? ( I will also be posting in the panic attack group)

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

Life never stays the same, it always changes. In that case, I would have got a second opinion and you probably could have avoided all the physical and emotional pains you were tortured with!
If I were you, I would see a different doctor and, not ask, but tell him you need to go back on the prozac and tell him what you just told us here.
Prozac is nowhere near as bad as alcohol as far as drugs are concerned. It's a very safe medication. The only problem I had with it when I was on it was a little weight gain but I switched to pristiq which is one of the newer ones and I have been fine ever since!
Go see a different doctor and on the way home, stop at an AA meeting. You will be glad you did!
We will keep you in out thoughts and prayers!
God Bless!
As far as the med thing goes I am on a maintenance drug for a mental condition - bipolar for the rest of my life. I thought I was better once and went off it. I was fine for a year , but I got sick again. That was 19 years ago and I've taken the meds everyday ever since. It took awhile to stabilize and the meds have been tweaked here and there over the years, but the discomfort and side effects were more than worth it.
A doctor once told me I had two chances of quitting my destructive drinking without meds - slim and none. And through much trial and error it became apparent to me that slim had left the building...
As for a support group for your drinking I would recommend Women for Sobriety. If you go the AA route be very careful and stay with the women.
I am not sure if antidepressants change our thinking and the way we perceive and view the world, but my experience is that it does just that. I don't think I could make it at all without some kind of mood stabilizer and/or antidepressant. I don't understand why any doctor would take you off of an antidepressant, if it's working for you.
Actually, our mental problems and our addiction to alcohol are quite different. It's two different problems. Addiction is a disease, and other mental problems are another disease. If you have both, then it's a double whammy because they feed on each other.
Prozac is nowhere near as bad as alcohol. Tell your doc to put you back on Prozac, immediately! Or find another doctor.
Drinking will only complicate, lengthen, and lessen the impact of the meds. You are not alone in drinking alcoholically and having a mental condition. Estimates run as high as 50% of alcoholic drinkers having a serious no fault mental condition requiring meds...
