When I went to AA meetings and just focused on staying sober, got a sponsor and did the steps, everything else in my life worked out. My wife canceled her dicorse, I got a job I really liked,, I had money coming from places I never expected, and my relationships improved. I found that to be true for many other AA members just from listening to their stories so I was fully aware that it could happen to me also.

At the beginning of every AA meeting I ever went to, They read these papers about how AA works. Something called the 12 traditions and the 12 Promises.; Every one of the AA 12 Promises have come true for me in my life:

The AA Promises
1. If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed
before we are half way through.
2. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.
3. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.
4. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.
5. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience
can benefit others.
6. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.
7. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.
8. Self-seeking will slip away.
9. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.
10. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.
11. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.
12. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for
ourselves
Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us -
sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.

Go to AA meetings and you hear far more stories about turning lives around more than that.

Sobriety transforms people. There are many ways to do it, but in AA, drinking is just a symptom of your character defects. They were certainly of mine.

I had to learn accountability, empathy, tolerance, patience and so much more. Only the steps of AA helped me do that, and in the process helped eliminate my obsession for alcohol.

So many people have seen a change in me that is natural. You will hear stories in AA about people turning their lives around.

I’d recommend reading the big book of Alcohlics Anonymous. There are great stories in there of what you’re asking about.

If you are willing to go to a meeting, walk in an listen. Try different meetings and meet as many people as possible.

Hi flash. I can tell you my experience and I think it’s hopeful. After a few months of abstinence, my head began clearing to the reality of what a mess of my life I had made. My wife and I started talking in the most honest and open way we ever had. This is how I saw the distance that my drinking had caused. For a long time I thought she was pulling away. Turns out it was me pushing her away. We talked about some separation time so we could both sort out our feelings. At first this threw me off until I realized that the most important thing was to learn how to live a healthier lifestyle. I finally took responsibility for my own health/happiness. Months went by and I followed my inner higher power. The positive changes I have adopted allowed me to respect myself and want to keep it going. Not for her but for me. Slowly we started rebuilding our relationship as if we had a fresh start. No expectations just joy of spending time with her ,with us being present for each other. Now our marriage is the best it’s ever been because it’s real and honest. So looking back I can say that embracing sobriety turned my perception of life around which saved my marriage. Accepting that I might have been too late and lost her was hard in the beginning but that cleared my mind to see the bigger picture. That without a solid relationship with myself, there was not a chance of a real intimacy with anyone else. All that matters is healing your emotional and spiritual health. Then what will be will be.

I got so bad at the end of my drinking career that my wife sent me to in patient treatment. I reluctantly agreed to go after she very nicely told me "If you don't go, you might not have a home to come back to." I went and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. As many have said drinking is just a symptom of a deeper problem. I kept everything inside of me my entire life. While I was in treatment I learned to open up and share my feelings. I learned so much about myself and a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. Now that I am home I tell my wife about my feelings. We are open and honest with each other. Our marriage has been great for the last 3 months. We are getting along better then ever. It can be done and your marriage can be saved. You just need to be willing to change, which believe me I know is easier said then done. Go to some AA meetings or consider in patient treatment or and output patient program to get the help you need. You can do it, so many of us have. Be Strong.
