I was depressed for many years, until I truly found God in my heart, learned about forgiveness of myself and others - anger management also taught me to releaes and let go, when I let go of what I could not control and focused on what i could, life started to turn around, including the feeling of wellness and accomplishment and depression somehow went by the wayside.

Hi, why not attend an open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous? You do not have to say who you are, sign anything or pay anything.

I too suffered from depression and panic attacks during my drinking days but I feel great today and it is all thanks to the 12 Step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous and God (as I understand Him). It is a spiritual programme of recovery. You do not need to be religious to be an AA member, just go with an open mind.

Have a chat with your doctor about the amount you are drinking with your meds and tell him of your decision to stop drinking. It seems you already know about the depressant effect of alcohol, which effectively cancel out the benefits of an anti-depressant. Do not stop or alter anything without consulting your doctor.

There is a lot of help and support in AA. There are two member groups on here that are AA friendly. Just go out of the discussion view back to the main view of this Alcoholism support page. On the bottom right of the page there is a list of all member support groups.

Check with your doctor or a shrink, there are nuerobiological implications to much depression. It can be treated like any other illness. I was suicidal, I got help, I'm getting help, I'm helping myself. I'm clean and sober and life is a great trip. All my best to you. Namaste

Depression eases a lot with sobriety. Mine did anyway. So did the panic attacks. I am now able to handle things head on. No medication. Mostly, I think, that panic came from not doing something I was supposed to be doing. When your drinking, a lot of the things that are supposed to be getting done, are put on the back burner. Sometimes until it is too late.

My mood symptoms continued unabated after I quit drinking. I have bipolar disorder and it doesn't respond well to medication. I know a lot of people whose symptoms disappear when they stop drinking. If yours don't I would see a doctor. You might get an anti-depressant to help you out until your body adjusts to sobriety.

DEFINITELY seek a doc's advise if you haven't already. If Depression is your problem there are many ways you can be helped, medication and therapy being the two that jump out. Having a new baby in your life will rock your boat and you may find this can give you a jumpstart in giving up the booze...best of luck to you.

I used alcohol to self medicate for BP disorder. It made It much worse but after I started drinking it was the only thing that helped the racing thoughts and the anxiety to calm down. With the depression, I became more sad but it would numb the pain.I eventually became dependent and my drinking was out of control. Since I stopped, My BP has gotten much better and I'm finally stabilized with meds, God and AA. I hope you will see a psych doc about your depression. It's a serious disorder that you can get help for. Don't give into the booze! That sh@@ it poison! I hope you feel better very soon! Good luck!

Usually depression goes away by itself after we are sober for awhile if it don't you may want to see someone, here is a group that is helpful also.

alcohol is a depressant and causes depression, stay sober for awhile and it should go away if it don't see a Dr. about it. Working the 12 steps should deal with your depression.

Alcohol is considered a depressant but does produce a depressing affect.

The brain's neocortex (the outer layer of brain cells) inflicts a depressant effect.

The neocortex, along with alcohol's depressant effect, together produce a combined positive affect. That is, there is a lessening of inhibition on one's behavior, at least initially.

In mathematical terms-two negatives create a positive. This is why people tend to loosen up after a couple of drinks.

the most difficult thi9ng to deal with is depression.......i always make a point to listen to my favorite tune {skynyrd.....simple man)


i think the secret is finding what eases the soul. it is an individual quest.......i have always thought that one of the strongest remedies is to step out ones self and reflect on the gift that your touch has given to others...........focus on your grandson and have fond memories or water balloons.............

Deep dark depression as you put it should not be taken lightly and you should see a doctor ASAP. Depression and trying to fight to stay sober is a very hard balancing act.
