Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Hello, I'm wondering what to do/think about a friend of mine who is recently sober (a little over 2 weeks). He really doesn't have a lot of support, refuses support groups, does see a therapist once every 2 weeks but yesterday he told me that he he was bored most of the time, is having a hard time restarting his business and has thoughts of suicide and 'other things' but didn't elaborate. He also told me that he took his gun (which he hadn't fired) to the shooting range yesterday. He has no interest in anything.. I am also an alcoholic so I'm not a new kid on the block.. but says he has no desire for alcohol. To me, all of these things point to the high probability of a relapse and god knows what else. I didn't have suicidal thoughts etc when I got sober so any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. He said the only thing he looks forward to is sleep. Anyhow, I'm just checking the pulse to see what other think. Thank you.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

First up anyone who threatens suicide and has the means of carrying that out needs to be taken seriously. As you say this person has the ability ie the weapon coupled with the depression. What in my understanding is next most concerning is if he has a plan.
If you can broach the topic without escalating the issue would be helpful. If he does have a plan and the means to carry this out then ask him if he has spoken with his therapist about his plan, if not then ask if he would do so. Whatever way all you do is support them and encouraging him to seek professional help.
Secondly and at the risk at sounding cruel whatever way the person goes is their decision, whilst you can support you can not force him to do anything. This also means you are not responsible for his behaviours/actions.
Please remember this is just my understanding, I wish you and your friend all the best G8
I'm with Gr8. If someone mentions or alludes to being suicidal, you can't afford not to take it seriously. Especially as it regards your personal safety if he's going to the range to practice using his gun and you think he's not stable at this point.
Most police departments have trained Mental Health Deputies who can come assess the person and commit them for 24 hours until they can see the hospital psychiatrist. Might be a good idea to go visit family just to get away from the mess. It's not your job to monitor him. Whatever he does, it's on him.
Godspeed in whatever you decide.
No idea of what your circumstances are or if you are able to just up and go. However, as you said if he relapses you would be out of there, problem is you may not realise he has relapsed till it is too late. If you can go now go, especially if you have no emotional tie to him.
At this point in time your safety is your first concern everything else is secondary.
Then as G2B says maybe involve the police.
Wishing you well G8
IMHO!
Good Luck!
He needs help and medication. That is all you can suggest to him.
You can't project if he will relapse or not and as you know..you have to take care of YOU and the rest will work out.
