Alcoholism Support Group
Alcoholism is the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, even when it is negatively affecting your health, work, relationships and life. If you think alcohol is causing you to lose control, it's time to seek help. Our group is a safe place to vent, check in, get back up if you fall, and reach sobriety.

Everything changes including us. You are not the same person who went to booze every time a uncomfortable situation arises.
I am going through the same. My friend's brain cancer recurred. The doc said that it's too late. There is nothing that can be done. I enjoy my moments with him. He is going on his life enjoying every moment as he always did.
I realize that life is not permanent. I do not attach that everyone around me will always be there. Sure I will be sad and cry, when he dies. I will go through the grieving process. If i turned to booze I would avoid the grieving, which is healing.
I am sorry to hear about your friend. Drinking might sound like a good idea to your friend or it may not but there is no reason why you should drink over it. Death is difficult to accept at any time but whether we like it or not it comes to everyone, sometimes after a long life and occasionally to people who seem much too young.
Although you probably will not see it that way right now, your reasons for wanting to drink may not be what you think they are. When drinking becomes an obsession, a reason will always be found to justify it. If someone had told me about that when I was drinking I would have laughed it off and suggested they were crazy because there was always a convincing reason for my drinking. I found out later that I drank for only one reason and the rest was only justification. The real reason why I drank as I did was because I had become an alcoholic.
You can be there for your friend and do your best to help other people who will be angry and confused. You can also see that life is short and that every moment is precious. Why not start making the most of your own life my doing whatever it takes to get sober.
God....Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference!
When times were tough for me, I would say this simple little prayer over and over again, throughout the day. It has helped me many times when the days were dark!
God Bless you and your friend!
At least you have acknowledged that drinking sounds like a good idea but you know that it is not. You would probably regret looking back on this time and knowing that you drank again, instead of spending precious and sober time with your friend.
You say you "know" drinking might sound like a good idea.
You also say you know it's not.
Which is it? I hope you choose wisely. Just breathe.
