Agoraphobia & Social Anxiety Support Group
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder, often precipitated by the fear of having a panic attack in a setting from which there is no easy means of escape. As a result, sufferers of agoraphobia may avoid public and/or unfamiliar places. In severe cases, the sufferer may become confined to their home, experiencing difficulty traveling from this "safe place."
I have no difficulty being on the phone, professionally, either. It's strange. I can't explain it.
Do you have a really good friend or someone close to you who you may practice calls with? It might help you relax if you play out different conversation/ phone call scenarios with a friend.
There may come a time when you will have to deal with emergencies and you won't have a choice but to take or make the call.
I hope my suggestion helps.
Most of the time my phone is on vibrate so I can't hear it, I will check it from time to time to see if any calls.
If I'm at a family gathering and some family member calls from far away and the family wants to pass the phone around I want to leave, don't like the pressure to say a few words that mean something, which should not be so hard but it is, and. in front of others, I hate talking on the phone around other people. I pace while on the phone, can't sit still.
I always imagine that crickets sound when no one is talking because those awkward silences come up sometimes, and I feel blank. What do I say?
Maybe Idab you could somehow translate that feeling when you make calls at work to the personal calls? I can do that too, make business calls alright because their is less expectation to be yourself, which is hard, I can "be" someone else when I make business/doctor calls.
I have run a business somehow for 26 years being totaly afraid of the phone even though it is the lifeline. Not sure how i managed.
Unlike a few posters I actually find it relatively easy to talk to close friends and family but struggle when it's someone I don't know.
The last time I had to talk to someone on the phone was when I couldn't get my new cellphone activated and I had to call tech support. Luckily, I was super angry and frustrated so that helped with the anxiety.
