Agoraphobia & Social Anxiety Support Group
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder, often precipitated by the fear of having a panic attack in a setting from which there is no easy means of escape. As a result, sufferers of agoraphobia may avoid public and/or unfamiliar places. In severe cases, the sufferer may become confined to their home, experiencing difficulty traveling from this "safe place."
i am new, my doctor recommended i join a group for support, i only leave home to go to familiar, close places (within 5 Minutes of my house) and only with a support person, i always have to drive, never ride, and i never go near the interstate. my therapist sees me via zoom meetings or i never would have seeked help. it feels helpless to know in your mind that there are things you will never do and places you will never go. can anyone relate?

Welcome to the website. Lots of nice, supportive people here.
I am agoraphobic also, for decades now, so I can completely relate to what you just wrote. I have a question. Is your therapist working with you on the agoraphobia? Some of the best ways is to do Exposure & Desensitization therapy.
You could do this on your own, too. There are lots of good books about it, and also information online.
Basically, taking baby steps. Inching little by little toward expanding your current comfort zone.
And second question, are you on an anti anxiety medication? I went on medication before I even started therapy. Just to calm my anxiety enough to even try these kinds of exposure therapy.
Welcome and we look forward to hearing more from you!!
my own recovery has benefitted mightily from the dual approach of pro and peer support. the pros can be a wealth of theory and knowledge while my peers help me translate that pro expertise into the mechanics of every day life.
this particular forum is not very active, but ds has allot of more active forums. i hope you will take the time to surf around and see what other sources of peer support are available here.
welcome aboard. i hope you find healing companionship here.
Don't stop fighting this and don't ever lose hope. I hope you are making progress in your journey, and one day all of this will be behind you. Take care.
