My feeling about this is that GPs are about as helpful as your next door neighbor, and will often give the same results. This is the kind of problem that requires a specialist.

You wouldn't be the first person I've heard say that about GPs, by a long shot. But do specialists really do that much better? I didn't have much success with either in my preteen and teen years. Does anybody have any positive or negative experiences with seeing a specialist for adult bedwetting?

It is always gratifying to hear top professors of physiology or whatever admit: " Even today, we know virtually nothing about the human body and its functioning"! About "functional" as opposed to "organic" enuresis they seem to admit to being mystified - "etiology unknown", "atopic". "unknown origin". The first GP I braved to mention it to wisely said: " Come back in 2 weeks - if no change I will refer you to a urologist". Who to be fair tried every pill going [like Russian Roulette], and alarms, urodynamics, cystoscopy etc. All to no avail. Reminds me of the medical joke: " Have you had this problem before?..... Ah well, you've got it again."

I only spoke to a doctor about it once, when I was like 12 years old. My mother insisted I mention it to the doctor on a visit for something else. He just said "you'll outgrow it." Wrong-O !

I have been through a ton of tests and no answers other than my mild spina bifida messed up the nerves going to my bladder. One urologist told me I had nothing wriong and I was wasting his time. I said "Then why is there pee streaming out into my diaper or bed without protection?" i was so mad i vowed never to go back again and don't care if it is ever fixed now. I have dealt with this and diapers since age 9 (40 years now) and don't see any changes oin sight (other than diapers ....hahahaha). I lost faith in the medical profession (Urology) after that final visit. They want to toss pills at us or cut us up.

When I was a kid growing up and wetting the bed most nights I was taken to the Doctors on numerous occasions. The stock answer was "oh don't worry about it he'll become dry in his own time". I was never refered to any specialist though for a short while I did have a bedwetting alarm which didn't work for me. It wasn't until I was about 15 when I started to get some practical help and for the first time was refered to a continence nurse.
Even now my Doctor was very matter of fact about it when I told him that my bedwetting had returned at 50 years of age. He just said he would refer me to a urologist . I guess incontinence and bedwetting isn't life threatening so they leave it to the urologists and continence nurses to deal with. I have to say the continence nurse was brilliant. She made me feel very at ease talking about it.

my doctor said it was from add/adhd and id out grow mine. WRONG WRONG WRONG. mabie a few dry nights here or there but 90 percent of the time WET WET WET.

Do Doctors still come up with that old saying.

Hi I'm new around here - I've had some experience with this one.

All the doctors I've every interacted with about my bedwetting have acted as though they didn't want to touch it with a 10 foot pole. I have always had to really push/force the issue to get them to even discuss it and even then -- their 'solutions' or suggestions of 'causes' are the most cursory and generic imaginable.

I even saw a urologist once and he was almost entirely dismissive...essentially said: "you're healthy, you're fine, see you later."

I guess I've dealt with it for so long now (mine started as an adult about 5 years ago) that the taboo sheen has begun to wear off. Not for everyone else I guess.
