The bulk of the available data on the treatment of AD/HD are derived from studies in children. Here is a summary of the pharmacotherapy that has been found to be effective in Adults with AD/HD
1) Stimulants (Adderall, ritalin) are the most commonly used meds in adults with AD/HD but the response rate varies from 25-78% in the limited number of studies and concerns about effects on heart rate and BP make them more difficult to use in adults
2) an Atypical stimulant Modafinil (Provigil) has been found to be as effective as Ritalin in studies and does not have effects on HR and BP.
3) Antidepressants : Tricyclic antidepressants (desipramine, imipramine) and Buproprion (Wellbutrin) have also been found to be as effective as stimulants in Adult AD/HD
4) Strattera is a NON stimulant FDA approved for adult AD/HD based on studies which found it to be more effective than placebo for Adult AD/HD

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Medication is not an easy thing because we react differently. Can be a bit of a hit and miss. Some Doctors won't change medication unless you are firm with them.
Trileptal is used at times for children with Autism although they do not suffer seizures. Used primariy to treat mood (behaviour)disorders. Perhaps he thinks you're husband displays autism traits? Whatever works is great.
Speaking for myself I find the anti-convulsant medication(Lamictal) has improved my behaviour(mood swings) dramatically. Conventional psychotropic meds make me so ill.
I agree with you Dr Orange that many ADHD diagnoses are in fact disorders of depression and anxiety.
Kind of agree with you on stimulant medication. There are no long term studies on stimulant medication pathology. I know someone who took stimulant meds for ten years. He developed paranoid scizophrenia and was frightening when in a psychotic state. It took 30mgs of Zyprexa to calm him down.
I was eventually diagnosed with Aspergers with ADHD and GAD. Took me a while to except the diagnoses until I spoke to other Aspies and researched my childhood.
